BYD Song EV Parts

The Song EV is a five-door, five-seat electric SUV, sold in China from April 2017 with front-wheel drive and a single 160 kW motor. The one thing that matters most for ordering is that BYD fitted two different battery chemistries to the same bodyshell across the run, lithium iron phosphate and then nickel-cobalt-manganese, so the pack under the floor and its charging ceiling depend on which one landed in the car in front of you, not on the badge on the tailgate.

Symptom Finder: Known Weak Points

What you see or hearCheck first
DC charging slower than expected Confirm which pack is fitted first. The EV300 charges at up to 40 kW and the EV400 and EV500 at up to 60 kW. If the car is below its own limit, inspect the charging socket and its wiring and order parts by OE number.
Brake judder or grinding after the car has stood for a while Rust on the disc faces. Regenerative braking does much of the slowing, so discs can corrode before they wear thin. Inspect both axles and order discs and pads by OE number.
Weak cabin heat or slow demisting in cold weather The heater, blower and evaporator hardware. With no engine heat to draw on, all cabin warmth comes from electrical parts, so check the blower and heater circuit before suspecting the battery.
Knocking from the front over bumps Control arm bushes, strut top mounts and the struts themselves. The car weighs about two tonnes, so these wear steadily. Order each part by side and OE number.
A new bumper, grille or lamp will not line up The front style. Cars from 30 August 2018 have the Dragon Face body, and the EV400 has its own front bumper, so check the build date and match the part by OE number.
Tyres wearing unevenly across the tread Wheel alignment and the rear multi-link bushes. Worn bushes let the rear wheels move out of line, so inspect them before fitting new tyres.

About BYD Song EV Parts

The BYD Song EV is the fully electric version of BYD's first-generation Song compact SUV. It was first shown in April 2016, launched in April 2017, and later replaced by the Song Pro EV and Song PLUS EV. It drives the front wheels through a single 160 kW motor with 310 Nm of torque, and it has no engine, so there is no engine oil, exhaust or fuel system to service. The parts that matter are the traction battery with its charging hardware, the heating and air-conditioning system, which has no engine heat to draw on, and the suspension and brakes of a five-seat SUV weighing about two tonnes. Three versions, the EV300, EV400 and EV500, share the same 2,660 mm wheelbase, but the battery and the body both changed during the run. Every part here is listed by OE number, and matching the number on the old part is the surest check of fit.

What to know before buying BYD Song EV parts

Start by working out which of the three versions you have, because the battery and the front of the car changed at different times. The EV300 launched on 17 April 2017 with a 48 kWh lithium iron phosphate battery, DC charging of up to 40 kW, and a body measuring 4,565 mm long, 1,870 mm wide and 1,720 mm high. The EV400 followed in early 2018, on pre-sale in February and on sale in March. It kept the EV300 body with a revised front bumper and fog lamp area, and moved to a 61.9 kWh nickel-cobalt-manganese battery with DC charging of up to 60 kW. The EV500 arrived on 30 August 2018 with the new Dragon Face body, 4,600 mm long and 1,675 mm high, or 1,700 mm with roof rails, and the same 61.9 kWh battery.

Battery, charging and battery management parts therefore split into two groups, the EV300 on one side and the EV400 and EV500 on the other. The badge on the tailgate is a quick guide, but badges can be swapped, so confirm with the build date on the identification plate and then match each part by its OE number.

Body panels split three ways. The EV400's sides and rear are the same design as the EV300's, but its front bumper differs. The EV500 has a new front and rear, so a bumper, grille or lamp from before 30 August 2018 will not suit a later car. Do not assume petrol Song panels fit either. The petrol car is 1,830 mm wide against the Song EV's 1,870 mm, so wings, arch trims and bumpers must be matched by OE number.

The drive motor is rated the same on all three versions, 160 kW and 310 Nm, but still order it by the number on the old unit. The chassis uses MacPherson struts at the front, a multi-link rear axle, ventilated front discs and discs at the rear. Tyre sizes vary with version and trim. The EV400 was offered on 17-inch and 19-inch wheels, and EV500 trims ran 225/60 R18 or 235/50 R19, so read the size on the sidewall before ordering tyres or rims.

Before You Order: 7 Checks

  1. Match the OE number on the part you are replacing to the OE number on the listing, since that is the surest check of fit.
  2. Read the badge and then the build date on the identification plate before ordering battery or charging parts, since the EV300 pack differs from the EV400 and EV500 pack.
  3. Check whether the car has the Dragon Face front before ordering a bumper, grille or lamp, since the body changed on 30 August 2018.
  4. On an EV400, order front bumper parts for that car specifically, since its bumper differs from the EV300's even though the rest of the body matches.
  5. Read the tyre size on the sidewall before ordering tyres or rims, since sizes vary by version and trim.
  6. Do not fit petrol Song body parts without checking the OE number, since the petrol car is 40 mm narrower.
  7. Order painted panels by the colour code on the car rather than by colour name.

Generations and Facelifts

The Song EV grew out of the first-generation BYD Song, a petrol compact SUV shown at Auto Shanghai in April 2015 and on sale from October 2015. A plug-in hybrid, the Song DM, joined it, and the three cars share the same 2,660 mm wheelbase. The Song EV itself was first shown at the Beijing motor show on 25 April 2016 and launched as the EV300 on 17 April 2017, with a 48 kWh lithium iron phosphate battery and a 160 kW, 310 Nm front motor.

In early 2018 the EV400 replaced it. The body stayed the same apart from a revised front bumper and fog lamp area, but the battery changed to a 61.9 kWh nickel-cobalt-manganese pack and the DC charging limit rose from 40 kW to 60 kW. For parts, this is the date that splits the battery, battery management and charging hardware.

On 30 August 2018 BYD relaunched the whole Song family, petrol, DM and electric, in the Dragon Face design, and the electric car became the EV500. Length grew from 4,565 mm to 4,600 mm and height fell to 1,675 mm, or 1,700 mm with roof rails, while the wheelbase, width, motor and 61.9 kWh battery carried over. For parts, this is the date that splits the front and rear body panels, lamps and grille. We found no later facelift of the Song EV.

The Song Pro, from 2019, and the Song PLUS, from 2020, followed with their own electric versions. They are different cars, not updates of this one, so parts for them should not be assumed to fit. Before ordering battery, charging or body parts, read the build date on the identification plate.

BYD Song EV Parts: Frequently Asked Questions

How do I make sure a part fits my BYD Song EV?

Match the OE number. Every part on this site is listed under the OE number printed on the original part, and if the number on the part you are replacing matches the listing, the part fits. That matters on the Song EV because the battery changed in early 2018 and the body changed on 30 August 2018, so two cars that look alike can need different parts. If the old part is missing or its number is unreadable, send details through the quote form and we will reply within 24 hours, usually sooner.

How can I tell an EV300, EV400 and EV500 apart?

The badge is the first clue, and the body is the second. The EV300 and EV400 share the original body, 4,565 mm long, though the EV400 has a revised front bumper and fog lamp area. The EV500 has the Dragon Face front and a longer 4,600 mm body. Because badges can be changed, confirm with the build date on the identification plate: the EV400 arrived in early 2018 and the EV500 on 30 August 2018. Then match each part by its OE number.

Does my Song EV have a lithium iron phosphate or a ternary battery?

It depends on the version. The EV300 used a 48 kWh lithium iron phosphate battery. The EV400 and EV500 used a 61.9 kWh nickel-cobalt-manganese, or ternary, battery. The two packs differ in chemistry, capacity and charging limit, so battery, battery management and charging parts do not cross between them. Identify the version from the badge and the build date on the identification plate, then order each part by the OE number on the one you are replacing.

Do charging parts from an EV300 fit an EV400 or EV500?

Do not assume so. The EV300 charges on DC at up to 40 kW, while the EV400 and EV500 charge at up to 60 kW with a larger battery, and the hardware around the battery changed with it. The EV400 and EV500 share the same 61.9 kWh pack, so parts between those two are more likely to match. Whatever the version, read the OE number on the old part and order against that number rather than the model badge.

What changed on 30 August 2018?

BYD relaunched the whole Song family that day in its Dragon Face design, and the electric car became the EV500. Length grew from 4,565 mm to 4,600 mm and height fell to 1,675 mm, or 1,700 mm with roof rails. The wheelbase, the 1,870 mm width, the motor and the 61.9 kWh battery carried over. For parts, the change is in the body: bumpers, grille, lamps and trim from either side of that date differ, so check the build date before ordering them.

Do petrol Song or Song DM body panels fit the Song EV?

Not reliably. The petrol Song is 1,830 mm wide and the Song EV is 1,870 mm wide, so wings, arch trims and bumpers from the petrol car should not be assumed to fit. The Song DM plug-in hybrid shares the same 2,660 mm wheelbase and the same model family, but the electric car has its own front styling. The only safe check is the OE number on the old panel, so order by that number and the colour code rather than by the model family.

Is the drive motor the same on every Song EV?

The rating is the same on all three versions: a single front motor producing 160 kW and 310 Nm, driving the front wheels through a fixed-ratio gearbox. The EV500 kept that motor when the body and battery changed around it. Even so, order a motor or any part attached to it by the OE number on the unit you are replacing, since mounts, wiring and control parts can differ between versions even where the rating does not.

What tyre sizes does the Song EV use?

It depends on the version and trim. The EV400 was offered on 17-inch and 19-inch wheels, and EV500 trims ran either 225/60 R18 or 235/50 R19. Some listings also give a 17-inch size of 225/65 R17. With that much variation, the model name alone will not tell you the size. Read the size printed on the sidewall of the tyres already fitted and order to match, choosing rims to suit at the same time.

What brakes and suspension does the Song EV use?

The front suspension uses MacPherson struts and the rear a multi-link axle, both independent. The front brakes are ventilated discs, and the rear axle also uses discs. The car weighs about two tonnes, so bushes, struts and top mounts carry a steady load. Front and rear discs and pads are different parts, and the suspension arms are handed, so order each item by axle and side, and confirm it by the OE number on the old part.

Why do the brake discs rust rather than wear out?

Regenerative braking uses the motor to slow the car, so the friction brakes do less work than on a petrol car. Discs that are used lightly can build up corrosion on their faces, which shows as judder, grinding or uneven pedal feel, often before the discs are worn thin. Inspect both axles before assuming the pads are at fault, and replace discs and pads together on an axle, ordering each by its OE number.

Does the Song EV still need servicing parts?

Yes, though fewer than a petrol car. With no engine there is no engine oil, oil filter, spark plugs or exhaust. The car still needs brake fluid, a cabin air filter, wiper blades, tyres and air-conditioning service, and the suspension and brakes wear with mileage as on any SUV. The heating and air-conditioning hardware works harder than usual, since it supplies all cabin heat. Order service parts by the OE number on the parts being replaced.

Do Song Pro EV or Song PLUS EV parts fit my Song EV?

Do not assume they do. The Song Pro arrived in 2019 and the Song PLUS in 2020, and both are different cars rather than facelifts of the Song EV, with their own bodies, batteries and running gear. A part listed for either should not be fitted to a first-generation Song EV unless its OE number matches the part you are replacing. If you cannot find a match, send the details through the quote form and we will reply within 24 hours, usually sooner.
