Symptom Finder: Known Weak Points
| What you see or hear | Check first |
|---|---|
| A rear arm, spring or damper bought for a petrol Song will not fit | The DM has its own rear suspension, with coil-over units, a trailing arm and two lower lateral arms on its own subframe. Order rear parts from Song DM listings by OE number. |
| A replacement fuel tank or silencer does not line up | The DM's tank sits across the car and its silencer is cylindrical, unlike the petrol Song's. Order tank, straps, lines and silencer by the OE number on the old part. |
| Judder or jerky take-off at low speed | Check the dry dual-clutch gearbox and its clutch parts. Dry clutches work hardest in slow traffic, so match any clutch part or fluid to the dry unit by OE number. |
| Engine warning light while the petrol engine is running | Start with the lambda sensors, spark plugs and ignition coils on the 1.5-litre turbo engine, then order each by the OE number on the old part. |
| Rear brake or parking brake warning | Check the rear caliper and the electronic parking brake motor. Match a replacement caliper to the parking brake unit fitted, and order pads to suit. |
| Electric range well short of what it was when new | Check the battery and charging parts, and read the build date first, since early cars carry the 16.9 kWh pack and new-generation cars the 17.6 kWh pack. |
| Air conditioning blowing warm or weak air | Check the blower, evaporator and the rest of the cabin cooling circuit before ordering, then match each part by OE number. |
| Corrosion found on fuel lines or tank straps | The DM has plastic shields over its underbody pipework. Lift them to check the lines and straps underneath, then order from Song DM listings. |
Most Replaced Parts on the Song DM
- Control arms and bushingsRear arms are unique to the DM, and two of them are aluminium alloy
- Shock absorbers and strutsCoil-over rear units on their own subframe, not shared with the petrol Song
- Fuel tank, lines and filtersThe tank sits across the car, so petrol Song tanks and straps do not fit
- Evaporator, blower and heater core partsCabin cooling and heating parts, matched by OE number to the unit fitted
- Spark plugsThe 1.5-litre turbo engine still needs plugs at normal service intervals
About BYD Song DM Parts
The BYD Song DM is the plug-in hybrid version of the first BYD Song, a five-seat compact SUV launched in April 2017. It drives all four wheels with no propshaft. At the front, a 1.5-litre turbo petrol engine and a 110 kW motor drive through a six-speed dry dual-clutch gearbox. At the back, a second 110 kW motor drives the rear wheels on its own. A ternary lithium pack of 16.9 kWh or 17.6 kWh sits in the middle of the floor. The car therefore needs two kinds of parts: engine oil, filters, spark plugs and fuel system parts like any petrol car, and motor, battery and charging parts like an electric one. It shares its body shell with the petrol Song, but its width, rear suspension, fuel tank and exhaust are its own. Every part on this page is listed by OE number, and matching the number on the old part is the surest fitment check.
What to know before buying BYD Song DM parts
Start by confirming the car is a Song DM and not a petrol Song. The two share a body shell and a 2,660 mm wheelbase, but the DM is 1,870 mm wide against 1,830 mm for the petrol car, and it has a charging flap and a rear drive motor that the petrol car does not. With 40 mm of extra width, do not assume bumpers, arch trims or side panels cross between the two.
Under the floor the two cars differ far more. A chassis teardown of the DM found its rear suspension rebuilt around the rear motor, with two lower lateral arms and a trailing arm, the spring and damper combined in one coil-over unit, and a more compact subframe of its own. The trailing arm and one lateral arm are aluminium alloy. The petrol Song keeps its springs and dampers separate on a different set of links. Rear arms, bushes, springs, dampers and the subframe are therefore specific to the DM. The same teardown found the fuel tank turned to sit across the car, making room for the battery in the middle of the floor, and the exhaust silencer changed from a long, flat design to a cylindrical one. Tank, straps, fuel lines and silencer sections are DM parts, and they are the parts most often ordered from a petrol listing by mistake.
The gearbox is a six-speed dry dual-clutch. BYD also builds a wet dual-clutch unit for other models, and its parts and fluid do not suit this one, so match clutch parts and fluid to the dry unit by OE number. Both drive motors are rated at 110 kW, but the front motor works with the engine and gearbox while the rear motor drives the rear axle alone. Order a motor or its mountings by the axle it came from.
A few things vary from car to car. Launch cars ran 225/60 R18 tyres, and from January 2018 the top trim gained 19-inch wheels, so read the size on the tyre sidewall before ordering tyres or rims. The rear brakes work with an electronic parking brake, so a rear caliper must match the unit fitted. Order painted panels by the colour code on the car rather than by colour name.
Two dates split parts. A light update on 9 January 2018 softened the front end, enlarged the upper grille and changed the fog lamp surrounds. The relaunch on 30 August 2018 brought the Dragon Face front, a full-width tail light, a body length of 4,600 mm against 4,565 mm, a belt-driven starter-generator on the engine and a 17.6 kWh pack in place of the 16.9 kWh one. Read the build date on the identification plate before ordering front-end panels, lighting, engine ancillaries or anything connected to the battery.
Before You Order: 8 Checks
- If you are unsure whether the car is a Song DM or a petrol Song, look for the charging flap and measure the width, 1,870 mm on the DM, before ordering body or chassis parts.
- Match the OE number on the part you are replacing to the OE number on the listing before you order.
- Because the January 2018 update and the August 2018 relaunch both changed parts, read the build date on the identification plate before ordering front-end panels, lighting, engine ancillaries or battery parts.
- Because the DM's rear suspension, subframe, fuel tank and exhaust differ from the petrol Song, order them from Song DM listings only.
- Since the gearbox is a six-speed dry dual-clutch, match clutch parts and fluid to that unit by OE number.
- As the rear brakes work with an electronic parking brake, match a replacement rear caliper to the one fitted.
- Because 18-inch and 19-inch wheels were both fitted, read the tyre size on the sidewall before ordering tyres or rims.
- Order painted panels by the colour code on the car, not by colour name.
Generations and Facelifts
The Song DM began as the plug-in hybrid version of the petrol BYD Song, a compact SUV on a 2,660 mm wheelbase. It launched in April 2017 on the petrol car's shell, widened to 1,870 mm, with everything under the floor rebuilt. It had a 110 kW motor at each axle with no propshaft between them, a 1.5-litre turbo engine with a six-speed dry dual-clutch gearbox, a 16.9 kWh battery pack in the middle of the floor, a fuel tank that sits across the car and a rear suspension of its own. BYD quoted an electric range of 80 km.
The 2018 model year arrived on 9 January 2018 as a light update. The front end was softened, the upper grille enlarged and the fog lamps given black surrounds with chrome detail, and the top trim gained 19-inch wheels. Dimensions and powertrain did not change, so the update matters mainly for front bumper parts, grilles and fog lamp trim.
On 30 August 2018 BYD relaunched the whole Song line, petrol, plug-in and electric, as the new-generation Song. The shell stayed the same, but the Dragon Face front and a full-width tail light arrived, and the body grew to 4,600 mm long on the same wheelbase. The Song DM moved to BYD's third-generation DM system, which added a belt-driven starter-generator at the engine, and it took a 17.6 kWh pack. Quoted electric range stayed at 80 km, so range does not tell the two packs apart.
That relaunch was the last major change to this car. The Song Pro, Song Plus and Song L that followed are different cars with their own bodies and powertrains, and their parts should not be assumed to fit. Before ordering front-end parts, lighting, engine ancillaries or battery parts, read the build date on the identification plate.
BYD Song DM Parts: Frequently Asked Questions
How do I make sure a part fits my Song DM?
Match the OE number. Every part on this site is listed under the OE number printed on the original part, and if the number on the part you are replacing matches the listing, the part fits. That check matters on the Song DM because it shares a shell with the petrol Song but little underneath, and because its parts changed in January 2018 and again in August 2018. If the old part is missing or its number is unreadable, send a photo through the quote form and we will reply within 24 hours, usually sooner.
How can I tell a Song DM from a petrol Song?
The Song DM is 1,870 mm wide and the petrol Song 1,830 mm, on the same 2,660 mm wheelbase. From the outside, the charging flap is the quickest sign. Underneath, the DM has a drive motor between the rear wheels, coil-over rear suspension and a fuel tank that runs across the car rather than along it. The petrol car has none of these. Once you know which car you have, confirm each part by the OE number on the one you are replacing.
Will rear suspension parts from a petrol Song fit the Song DM?
No. A chassis teardown of the Song DM found its rear suspension rebuilt around the rear motor, with two lower lateral arms and a trailing arm, the spring and damper combined in a coil-over unit, and a more compact subframe than the petrol car's. The trailing arm and one lateral arm are aluminium alloy to save weight. The petrol Song keeps its springs and dampers separate on a different set of links. Order rear arms, bushes, dampers, springs and subframe parts from Song DM listings, and check the OE number on the old part first.
Do the fuel tank and exhaust swap with the petrol Song?
No. To make room for the battery in the middle of the floor, the DM's fuel tank sits across the car rather than along it, and its silencer is a compact cylinder rather than the petrol car's long, flat design. The tank, its straps, the fuel lines and the silencer sections are all DM parts. The same teardown found thicker underbody coating, extra plastic shields over the pipework and a wider engine undertray. On a used car, lift the shields to check for corrosion, then order by the OE number on the old part.
Is the Song DM's dual-clutch gearbox wet or dry?
Dry. The Song DM uses a six-speed dry dual-clutch gearbox behind its 1.5-litre turbo engine. BYD also builds a wet dual-clutch unit for other models, and clutch parts and fluid for that unit do not suit this one. The front motor works through the front drive with the gearbox, while the rear motor drives the rear wheels on its own with no propshaft. Before ordering clutch parts, seals or fluid, match them to the dry unit by the OE number on the part or on the gearbox.
Are the front and rear drive motors the same part?
They have the same rating, 110 kW and 250 N·m each, but they do different jobs and sit in different places. The front motor works alongside the engine and gearbox, and the rear motor drives the rear axle by itself. Do not assume one can replace the other because the output figures match. Order a motor, its mountings or its wiring by the axle it came from, and confirm the OE number on the old unit before you order.
Which battery does my car have, 16.9 kWh or 17.6 kWh?
Cars from the 2017 launch carry a 16.9 kWh ternary lithium pack, and the new-generation Song DM launched on 30 August 2018 carries a 17.6 kWh pack. Both were quoted at 80 km of electric range, so the range figure will not tell you which one is fitted. Read the build date on the identification plate, then match battery, battery management and charging parts by OE number. If the numbers on the old part are unreadable, send a photo through the quote form and we will reply within 24 hours, usually sooner.
What changed in 2018, and which parts does it affect?
There were two changes. On 9 January 2018 the 2018 model year softened the front end, enlarged the upper grille, gave the fog lamps black surrounds with chrome detail and added 19-inch wheels to the top trim. On 30 August 2018 the new-generation Song brought the Dragon Face front, a full-width tail light, a length of 4,600 mm against 4,565 mm, a belt-driven starter-generator and the 17.6 kWh pack. Read the build date on the identification plate before ordering front-end parts, lighting, engine ancillaries or battery parts.
Which wheel, tyre and brake sizes were fitted?
Launch cars ran 225/60 R18 tyres, and from January 2018 the top trim gained 19-inch wheels, so two wheel sizes are on the road. Front brakes use ventilated discs, and the rear discs work with an electronic parking brake. Read the size on the tyre sidewall before ordering tyres or rims. For the brakes, match a rear caliper to the parking brake unit fitted, then order discs and pads by the OE number on the old parts.
It has a plug-in battery. Does the Song DM still need oil, filters and plugs?
Yes. The 1.5-litre turbo petrol engine, rated at 113 kW, still drives the front wheels through the gearbox, so it needs engine oil, oil and air filters, spark plugs and the usual lambda sensors. The fuel system, from the 52-litre tank forward, stays in use as well. Plan servicing as you would for a petrol car, then add checks on the charging and battery parts, and order each item by the OE number on the part you are replacing.
Does the Song DM have a power steering pump and belt?
No. The Song DM uses electric power steering, so there is no steering pump, drive belt, pressure hose or fluid reservoir to replace. A listing that offers a power steering pump for a first-generation Song is not for this car. If the steering feels heavy or a warning appears, check the steering rack and its electric assist unit, the track rod ends and the wiring, then order the part by the OE number on the old one.
Do parts from the Song Pro, Song Plus or Song L fit the Song DM?
Do not assume they do. The Song Pro, Song Plus and Song L came later and are different cars, with their own bodies, dimensions and powertrains, even though they share the Song name. A part listed only as Song may be meant for any of them. Before you order, check that the OE number on the listing matches the one on the part you are replacing. If you cannot find a match, send the details through the quote form and we will reply within 24 hours, usually sooner.
