Symptom Finder: Known Weak Points
| What you see or hear | Check first |
|---|---|
| Fine white powder blowing from the air vents | The air-conditioning evaporator. BYD traced this powder on Dolphins to the evaporator, so a new cabin filter alone will not stop it. Order the evaporator by OE number and clean the ducts when you fit it. |
| A bumper or grille that will not line up with the body | The body length. Early Chinese, facelifted Chinese and export cars have different bumpers on the same wheelbase, so measure the car and match the panel by OE number. |
| A replacement headlamp or tail lamp that does not fit its mounting or connector | Whether the car is from before or after the March 2025 facelift, which brought new lamps front and rear. Read the build date, then order by the OE number on the old lamp. |
| Knock or clonk from the rear over bumps | The rear bushes and arms. Confirm first whether the car has a torsion beam or multi-link suspension, since the parts differ, then order by OE number. |
| Brake judder, squeal or a pulsing pedal | Pads and discs. Read the tyre size first, since the car may run 16-inch or 17-inch wheels, then match discs and pads to the OE number on the old parts. |
| Driver-assistance warning after a new windscreen on a 2025 car | The three-camera unit under the windscreen and its bracket. Check that the glass suits a camera car and the bracket is undamaged, and have the cameras set up after fitting. |
| Coolant warning or a falling coolant level | Coolant hoses, the expansion tank and temperature sensors. The drive unit and battery rely on the coolant, so trace the leak to its source before ordering by OE number. |

About BYD Dolphin Parts
The BYD Dolphin is a compact five-door electric hatchback. It went into production in China in August 2021. It sits on BYD's e-Platform 3.0 with a 2,700 mm wheelbase. A single motor drives the front wheels and is rated at 70 kW, 130 kW or 150 kW depending on the version. It is fed by an LFP battery of between 30.72 kWh and 60.48 kWh. There is no engine, so the car needs the electric drive, battery cooling, air-conditioning and body hardware of a small electric car, plus the brakes, tyres and suspension that any hatchback wears out. What changes from car to car is the rear suspension layout, the wheel size and the bumpers at each end. These differ between Chinese and export cars and changed with the 2025 facelift. The OE number on the old part is the surest check that a replacement fits.
What to know before buying BYD Dolphin parts
Start with the badge. Three BYD cars carry the Dolphin name, and only one of them is this car. The Dolphin Surf is the export name for the smaller BYD Seagull, and the Dolphin G DM-i is a plug-in hybrid with a petrol engine. Neither shares body, drive or suspension parts with the Dolphin, so if the tailgate reads Surf or DM-i, this is the wrong page.
Next, work out which body you have. Every Dolphin has a 2,700 mm wheelbase, a 1,770 mm width and a 1,570 mm height, but the length depends on version and date. Chinese cars built before the facelift measure between 4,070 mm and 4,150 mm. The facelifted Chinese car sold from March 2025 measures 4,280 mm, and the longer export version measures 4,290 mm. The difference is all in the bumpers and overhangs, so front and rear bumpers, grilles, lamps and the brackets behind them have to be matched to the car in front of you. A tape measure from bumper to bumper is a quick first check, and the OE number on the old panel is the final one.
The rear suspension is the next split, and it follows the motor rather than the badge. In China the 2025 70 kW car has the torsion beam and the 130 kW and 150 kW cars have multi-link. The arms, bushes and axle hardware differ between the two layouts, so look behind the rear wheels before ordering anything for the back of the car.
Wheel and tyre sizes vary too. Chinese cars run 195/60 R16 or 205/50 R17. Read the size on the tyre sidewall rather than going by the trim name. All versions have ventilated front discs and disc brakes at the rear, and pads and discs should be matched by the OE number on the old part.
Finally, on a Chinese car, check whether it was built before or after the March 2025 facelift before ordering headlamps, tail lamps, bumpers, door handles, interior switchgear or a windscreen. The facelift brought new lamps front and rear, new bumpers, flush door handles, a column-mounted gear selector, a larger instrument display and a three-camera driver-assistance unit behind the windscreen. The build date on the identification plate tells you which side of the change a car falls.
Before You Order: 7 Checks
- Check the badge first. A Dolphin Surf or a Dolphin G DM-i is a different car, so find the page for that car before ordering.
- Match the OE number on the part you are replacing to the OE number on the listing, and order only when the two agree.
- Look behind the rear wheels before ordering rear suspension parts, and order arms and bushes for the torsion-beam or multi-link layout you find.
- Read the tyre size on the sidewall, whether 195/60 R16, 205/50 R17 or another size, and order tyres and rims to match it.
- On a Chinese car, read the build date on the identification plate before ordering lamps, bumpers, door handles or a windscreen, since the March 2025 facelift changed all of them.
- If you are unsure which body you have, measure from bumper to bumper. Lengths run from 4,070 mm to 4,290 mm, so order body-end panels to suit.
- Order painted panels by the colour code on the car rather than by colour name.
Generations and Facelifts
The Dolphin was first shown as the EA1 concept at Auto Shanghai in April 2021 and went into production in August 2021, one of the first cars on BYD's e-Platform 3.0. The early Chinese cars came with 30.72 kWh or 44.9 kWh batteries and measured between 4,070 mm and 4,150 mm long.
In 2023 BYD began selling a longer export version outside China. It keeps the Chinese car's wheelbase, width and height but has its own bumpers. Over the following model years the range gained stronger versions with a 150 kW motor and a 60.48 kWh battery, and the more powerful cars use multi-link rear suspension in place of the torsion beam. These updates changed equipment and trims, not the body shape.
The Dolphin's only facelift so far came in China. BYD announced it in February 2025, with God's Eye C driver assistance as standard, and it went on sale on 4 March 2025. It brought new headlamps, new tail lamps with an illuminated BYD badge, new bumpers, flush door handles, an 8.8-inch instrument display in place of the 5-inch unit, a column-mounted gear selector and a three-camera unit under the windscreen. The body grew to 4,280 mm, and batteries became 45.1 kWh and 60.48 kWh. Lamps, bumpers, handles and windscreen camera parts are specific to the facelifted car. Match body parts by OE number, and on a Chinese car read the build date on the identification plate.
BYD Dolphin Parts: Frequently Asked Questions
How do I make sure a part fits my BYD Dolphin?
Match the OE number. Every part on this site is listed under the OE number printed on the original part, and if the number on the part you are replacing matches the listing, the part fits. This matters on the Dolphin because the rear suspension, the wheel size and the bumpers all vary between cars that wear the same badge. If the old part is missing or its number cannot be read, send a photo of it through the quote form and we will reply within 24 hours, usually sooner.
Will Dolphin parts fit a Dolphin Surf or a Dolphin G DM-i?
No. The Dolphin Surf is the export name for the BYD Seagull, a smaller city car with its own body, and the Dolphin G DM-i is a plug-in hybrid with a petrol engine. All three carry the Dolphin name, but the other two share none of the Dolphin's body panels, drive unit or suspension. Check the badge on the tailgate before you start, and if it reads Surf or DM-i, look for parts under that car instead. Whatever the badge, confirm each part by the OE number on the one you are replacing.
Does my Dolphin have a torsion beam or multi-link rear suspension?
It depends on the motor. The lower-powered 70 kW cars use a torsion-beam rear axle, and the 130 kW and 150 kW cars use independent multi-link suspension. In China the 2025 70 kW car has the torsion beam and the other two versions have multi-link. The simplest check is to look behind the rear wheels before ordering, then match arms and bushes by OE number.
Why do Dolphin lengths range from 4,070 mm to 4,290 mm?
Because the bumpers differ while the core body stays the same. Every Dolphin has a 2,700 mm wheelbase, a 1,770 mm width and a 1,570 mm height. Early Chinese cars measure between 4,070 mm and 4,150 mm, the facelifted Chinese car sold from March 2025 measures 4,280 mm, and the longer export version measures 4,290 mm. The extra length sits in the front and rear overhangs, so bumpers, grilles, lamps and their brackets must be matched to the car. Order each by the OE number on the old part.
What changed with the 2025 facelift?
The facelifted Dolphin went on sale in China on 4 March 2025. It gained new headlamps, new tail lamps with an illuminated BYD badge, new front and rear bumpers, flush door handles, an 8.8-inch instrument display in place of the 5-inch unit, a column-mounted gear selector, and BYD's God's Eye C driver assistance with a three-camera unit under the windscreen. The length grew to 4,280 mm. On a Chinese car, read the build date on the identification plate before ordering lamps, bumpers, handles or interior switches, then match by OE number.
Do parts for a Chinese Dolphin fit the export version?
Some parts are shared and some are not. The Chinese car and the export car share the 2,700 mm wheelbase, the width, the height and much of the running gear. The export car is longer, at 4,290 mm, and its bumpers and body ends are its own. Chinese cars built from March 2025 also carry the facelift lamps and trim. Do not assume a part made for one version suits the other. Take the OE number from the part you are replacing and match it to the listing before you order.
Why does white powder come out of my Dolphin's air vents?
In 2022, hundreds of Dolphin owners in China reported white powder blowing from the vents. BYD traced it to the air-conditioning evaporator and said the powder was mainly aluminium hydroxide. The powder comes from the evaporator itself, so a fresh cabin filter will not cure it. The lasting fix is a new evaporator and a clean of the ducts. If you see the same powder, order the evaporator by the OE number on the fitted unit, and plan to clean the housing and ducts when it goes in.
What tyre size does the Dolphin use?
It varies by version. Chinese cars run 195/60 R16 or 205/50 R17. The wheel is chosen with the version, so the model name alone is not a reliable guide. A car that has changed hands may also be on different wheels from the ones it left the factory with. Read the size printed on the sidewall of the tyres already fitted, order tyres to match, and check rims against the same size before you buy.
Which battery does my Dolphin have, and does it matter for parts?
Chinese cars have used batteries of 30.72 kWh, 44.9 kWh, 45.1 kWh and 60.48 kWh. The battery size goes with the motor, and the motor decides the rear suspension layout, so it matters for more than the battery itself. For battery, charging or cooling parts, match the OE number on the fitted part. If that number is missing, send a photo of the part through the quote form.
Which motor does my Dolphin have?
There are three outputs, all driving the front wheels: 70 kW, 130 kW and 150 kW. The 2025 Chinese range uses these three outputs. The motor matters when ordering because the 70 kW car has a torsion-beam rear axle and the more powerful cars use multi-link, and wheel sizes differ between versions too. Check the trim badge, then confirm drive and suspension parts by the OE number on the fitted part.
What brakes does the Dolphin have?
Disc brakes all round. Chinese specifications list ventilated front discs and disc brakes at the rear on every 2025 version. The car can run 16-inch or 17-inch wheels, so do not assume the discs are the same on every Dolphin. Read the tyre size first, then order discs and pads by the OE number on the old parts. If the old disc has no readable number, send a photo of it through the quote form and we will reply within 24 hours, usually sooner.
Does the facelifted Dolphin have cameras behind the windscreen?
Yes. Chinese cars from March 2025 have BYD's God's Eye C driver assistance as standard, and it uses a three-camera unit mounted under the windscreen. Earlier cars do not have this unit. This matters when replacing the windscreen, because the glass and the camera bracket must suit a car with cameras, and the cameras may need setting up after a new screen is fitted. Match the windscreen by the OE number on the old glass, and check the camera bracket for damage before ordering.
