Symptom Finder: Known Weak Points

What you see or hearCheck first
Rear brake pistons will not wind back during a pad change The EV has an electronic parking brake. Put it into service mode with a diagnostic tool before retracting the pistons, then order pads and calipers by the OE number on the old parts.
Knocking or clunking from the rear over bumps Check the multi-link rear suspension arms and bushes. The EV's rear set-up differs from the petrol car's torsion beam, so order parts by OE number for this car.
Hum, play or a clunk from a front wheel Check the front wheel bearings, knuckles and struts. The front axle carries the motor, steering and most of the braking on a car of 1,830 kg kerb weight, so start there and order by side.
A tyre or wheel bought for a Song MAX does not fit The EV runs 225/50 R18 and the 1.5T petrol car 215/55 R17. Read the sidewall and order to the EV size.
Charging will not start or stops early Look over the charging socket, its seal and its pins for damage first. The car accepts DC charging at up to 60 kW, so a slower rate than newer cars get is normal. Order socket parts by OE number.
Coolant warning or a falling coolant level Check the coolant hoses, expansion tank, valves and temperature sensors. Trace the leak to the battery or motor circuit before ordering, then match the part by OE number.
A second-row bench is offered for this car Every EV has two separate second-row seats in a 2+2+2 layout. A bench belongs to a seven-seat Song MAX, so order seats and trim by OE number instead.

About BYD Song Max EV Parts

The BYD Song MAX EV is the battery-electric version of the Song MAX MPV. It went on sale on 25 October 2019 as the Zhixing Limited Edition, a small run sold only in Beijing. It keeps the petrol car's 4,680 mm body and 2,785 mm wheelbase, and it drives the front wheels through one permanent-magnet motor rated at 120 kW and 280 Nm. That motor runs from a 59.13 kWh ternary lithium battery. Because of that mix, the car draws on two pools of parts. Doors, side glass, the roof and much of the cabin come from the wider Song MAX family. The battery, motor, charging hardware, 18-inch running gear and multi-link rear suspension belong to the EV alone. Every part on this page is listed by its OE number, and matching the number on the old part is the surest way to confirm a fit.

What to know before buying BYD Song Max EV parts

Start by making sure the car is the EV. From the side and the rear it looks much like the petrol Song MAX, since the tail design is essentially the same. It also shares the 2,785 mm wheelbase and 1,810 mm width, and it matches the 4,680 mm length of the pre-facelift petrol car. The quick signs are the EV badge on the tailgate, the charging socket and the missing exhaust. The tyres are another giveaway. The EV runs 225/50 R18 front and rear, where the 1.5T petrol versions run 215/55 R17.

Under the car, the two differ more than the body suggests. The EV has MacPherson struts at the front and a multi-link independent rear suspension, while the 1.5T petrol car uses a torsion beam at the rear. Rear arms, bushes, hubs and dampers from a petrol car are therefore unlikely to suit. The EV has ventilated front discs, rear discs and an electronic parking brake. Manual petrol cars use a lever handbrake, so their rear calipers are a different part. Order all brake and suspension parts by OE number, whatever the donor car's badge says.

The battery, motor, charging hardware and the coolant plumbing that serves them are found only on this car. The battery is a 59.13 kWh ternary lithium pack. The later BYD M6 and eMAX 7 use Blade lithium iron phosphate batteries of 55.4 kWh or 71.8 kWh instead, and their parts cannot replace the Song MAX EV's even where they look similar. The EV was built in small numbers, so expect these parts to be scarce and quote them by the OE number on the old part.

The body is where most shared parts come from, but the front end needs care. The petrol Song MAX was facelifted on 1 August 2020, gaining a redesigned front bumper, losing its fog lamps and growing 30 mm in length. That bumper does not suit the EV, which never received the update. Match front bumpers, grilles and trim by OE number, and order painted panels by the colour code on the car, not the colour name.

Finally, check the seats. Every EV was built as a six-seater, arranged 2+2+2 with two separate second-row seats. The seven-seat petrol cars have a second-row bench, which does not belong in this car.

Before You Order: 8 Checks

  1. Look for the EV badge, the charging socket and the missing exhaust to confirm the car is the EV, then match every part to the OE number on the old part.
  2. The EV runs 225/50 R18 where the 1.5T petrol car runs 215/55 R17, so read the size on the sidewall before ordering tyres, wheels or brake parts.
  3. The EV has a multi-link rear suspension and the 1.5T petrol car a torsion beam, so order rear arms, bushes, hubs and dampers by OE number, not from a petrol listing.
  4. The EV has an electronic parking brake, so check the OE number on the old rear caliper and order the matching unit.
  5. The petrol car's August 2020 facelift changed the front bumper, so order front bumpers, grilles and trim against this car's own OE numbers.
  6. The battery is a 59.13 kWh ternary pack with no Blade parts from the M6 or eMAX 7, so quote battery and motor parts by the OE number on the old part.
  7. Every EV is a 2+2+2 six-seater, so check the seat layout and do not order a second-row bench.
  8. Order painted panels by the colour code on the car rather than by colour name.

Generations and Facelifts

The Song MAX EV grew out of the petrol Song MAX, a front-wheel-drive MPV that was previewed in April 2017 and launched in China in September 2017. It had a 1.5-litre turbocharged engine and came with six or seven seats. A plug-in hybrid, the Song MAX DM, followed in 2019.

The EV was first shown at Auto Shanghai in April 2019. It went on sale on 25 October 2019 as the Zhixing Limited Edition, in two trims, and was sold only in Beijing. It kept the petrol car's body and wheelbase but added its own 225/50 R18 wheels, multi-link rear suspension, electronic parking brake and front electric drive, along with a 59.13 kWh ternary battery.

In February 2020, images of a restyled EV appeared. They showed a new mesh grille, the cruise control radar moved into the bumper and new trim in place of the fog lamps. The restyle was expected at the Beijing show, but no source shows it going on sale. The EV has had no facelift, so treat every car as the original 2019 build.

The petrol car was facelifted on 1 August 2020. It gained a redesigned front bumper, lost its fog lamps and grew 30 mm in length on the same 2,785 mm wheelbase. Its front parts do not suit the EV. Petrol production ended in March 2022, and the DM-i plug-in hybrid took over from the DM that year.

In 2024 BYD launched the M6 as the next MPV on this line. In some markets outside China it is sold as the eMAX 7. It has different styling and Blade batteries of 55.4 kWh or 71.8 kWh. Its battery, drive and body parts are not a match for the Song MAX EV, so order by OE number rather than by resemblance.

BYD Song Max EV Parts: Frequently Asked Questions

How do I make sure a part fits my BYD Song MAX EV?

Match the OE number. Every part on this site is listed under the OE number printed on the original part. If the number on the part you are replacing matches the listing, the part fits. That check matters more than usual here, because the EV shares its body with the petrol and plug-in Song MAX but differs underneath, from the battery and motor to the wheels and rear suspension. If the old part is missing or its number is unreadable, send a photo through the quote form and we will reply within 24 hours, usually sooner.

How can I tell a Song MAX EV from a petrol Song MAX?

The two share a 2,785 mm wheelbase and a 1,810 mm width, and the EV matches the 4,680 mm length of the petrol car before its facelift. The tail design is also much the same. Look for the EV badge on the tailgate, the charging socket and the missing exhaust. Then read the tyre sidewall: the EV runs 225/50 R18, and the 1.5T petrol car runs 215/55 R17. Once you are sure which car you have, confirm each part by the OE number on the old part.

Do parts from a petrol or DM Song MAX fit the EV?

Some do. Doors, side glass, the roof and much of the cabin trim come from the same body, so they can cross over when the OE numbers match. The running gear is different. The EV has a multi-link independent rear suspension, while the 1.5T petrol car has a torsion beam, and the EV runs 18-inch wheels instead of 17-inch. The battery, motor and charging hardware exist only on the EV. Check the OE number on every part before ordering from a petrol or DM listing.

Will a front bumper from a facelifted petrol Song MAX fit?

No. The petrol Song MAX was facelifted on 1 August 2020. It gained a redesigned front bumper, lost its fog lamps and grew 30 mm in length on the same wheelbase. The EV went on sale in October 2019 and never received that update, so its front end follows the earlier car, with its own grille treatment. Images of a restyled EV appeared in February 2020, but no source shows that version going on sale. Order front bumpers, grilles and trim by the OE number on the old part.

Is the Song MAX EV the same car as the BYD M6 or eMAX 7?

No. The M6, which is sold as the eMAX 7 in some markets, is the MPV BYD launched in 2024 to follow the Song MAX. It has different styling and runs Blade lithium iron phosphate batteries of 55.4 kWh or 71.8 kWh. The Song MAX EV has a 59.13 kWh ternary lithium battery. Battery, drive and body parts from the M6 or eMAX 7 are not listings for this car, so order by the OE number on the part you are replacing.

What battery does the Song MAX EV use?

It uses a ternary lithium battery of 59.13 kWh, which gives an official NEDC range of 401 km. The battery is older than the Blade battery that BYD fitted to its later cars, including the M6 and eMAX 7, and the two are not interchangeable. If you need a module, a sensor, a connector or a coolant part for the battery, quote the OE number from the old part through the quote form. We will reply within 24 hours, usually sooner.

Why are battery and motor parts for this car hard to find?

The Song MAX EV was a limited edition, offered only in Beijing from October 2019, so the parts unique to it were made in small numbers. Those parts are the battery, the front motor, the charging hardware and the coolant plumbing that serves them. Most other parts, such as doors, glass, lamps and cabin trim, are shared with the far more common petrol and plug-in versions. Quote the unique parts by the OE number on the old part, and allow more time to source them than shared parts.

What wheels and tyres does the Song MAX EV use?

It uses 225/50 R18 tyres front and rear. The 1.5T petrol Song MAX runs 215/55 R17, so wheels and tyres from a petrol listing are the wrong size. Read the size on the sidewall of the tyres fitted before you order, in case the car has been changed since it left the factory. Match brake parts by OE number as well. Do not take them from a petrol car just because the body is shared.

Can the rear brake caliper be wound back by hand?

Not normally. The Song MAX EV has ventilated discs at the front, discs at the rear and an electronic parking brake. On a car with an electronic parking brake, the rear caliper is usually retracted with a diagnostic tool in service mode before the pads are changed. Some manual petrol Song MAX cars use a lever handbrake instead, so their rear calipers are a different part. Order rear calipers and pads by the OE number on the old unit.

Does the EV have the same rear suspension as the petrol Song MAX?

No. The EV has a multi-link independent rear suspension, while the 1.5T petrol car has a torsion beam. Rear arms, bushes, hubs and dampers therefore differ, even though the body above them is shared. Both cars use MacPherson struts at the front. The EV weighs 1,830 kg at the kerb and 2,515 kg fully laden, so the suspension works hard on a full six-seater. Order rear suspension parts by the OE number on the old part, not from a petrol listing.

Is the Song MAX EV a six-seater or a seven-seater?

Every Song MAX EV was built as a six-seater, arranged 2+2+2 with two separate seats in the second row. The petrol Song MAX was also sold with seven seats, arranged 2+3+2 with a second-row bench. If a second-row bench is offered for this car, it comes from a seven-seat Song MAX and does not belong here. Check the seat layout in the car, then order seat frames, runners and trim by the OE number on the old part.

How fast does the Song MAX EV charge?

It accepts DC charging at up to 60 kW. Charging from 30 to 80 per cent takes about half an hour, and from 5 to 100 per cent about an hour and a half. Newer BYD cars accept faster rates, so a slow session on a fast charger is not a fault in itself. If charging will not start or stops early, check the socket, its seal and its pins for damage first, then order the socket or cable parts by OE number.
