Symptom Finder: Known Weak Points
| What you see or hear | Check first |
|---|---|
| Heavy steering, or a whine when turning at low speed | On a car with a power-steering reservoir, check the fluid level, the pump and the pressure hoses. Confirm the car has a hydraulic rack before ordering any of them. |
| Parking brake warning, or a rear caliper piston that will not wind back by hand | The car probably has an electric parking brake, and its caliper needs the correct retraction procedure. Confirm the system fitted, then order the caliper by side and OE number. |
| Jerky pull-away or harsh shifts on an automatic | Read the gearbox fault codes and check the dual-clutch fluid before ordering gearbox parts. Wiring or software can cause the same symptoms as a failed unit. |
| Engine warning light, misfire or rough idle | Start with the spark plugs, ignition coils and lambda sensors, matched to the 154 PS or 160 PS engine fitted. |
| Falling coolant level or a coolant warning | Check the coolant hoses, expansion tank and sensors, including the turbocharger cooling lines. Trace the leak before ordering, then match the part by OE number. |
| Knocks from the rear over bumps, or a sagging rear when loaded | Check the rear springs and the torsion-beam axle bushes, and the front top mounts too. Order by side. |
| A wheel or brake disc from a plug-in Song MAX does not fit | The petrol car uses 17 inch wheels, and the later plug-in hybrids are listed on 18 and 19 inch. Order wheels and discs for the petrol car. |

About BYD Song Max Parts
The BYD Song MAX is a compact MPV with six or seven seats. It went on sale in China in September 2017 and was built with a petrol engine until March 2022. It drives the front wheels through a 1,497 cc turbocharged four-cylinder engine and either a six-speed manual or a six-speed dual-clutch gearbox. At the front it has McPherson struts, and at the rear a torsion-beam axle. For parts, that makes it a conventional petrol car. It needs oil and filters, ignition, cooling parts, gaskets and seals, plus the springs, mounts and brakes of a family car that often runs full. The gearbox matters more than the model year, because it decides the steering and parking brake hardware. Plug-in hybrid, electric and export versions share the name or the body but not the running gear. Every part here is listed by its OE number, and the number on the old part is the surest check that a replacement fits.
What to know before buying BYD Song Max parts
Start by making sure the car is the petrol Song MAX. From 2019 it was sold alongside the Song MAX DM plug-in hybrid and the Song MAX EV, and later DM-i hybrids joined them. All of these use the same 2,785 mm wheelbase and look much the same. They carry batteries, electric motors and their own cooling hardware, though, and the later plug-in hybrids are listed on 18 and 19 inch wheels. A charging flap on the body is the quick sign of a plug-in car. The M6 and eMax 7, sold abroad since 2024, are battery-electric cars and a separate case.
Next, confirm the steering and parking brake before ordering anything for them. Factory tables for the 2017 manual car list mechanical hydraulic power steering and a lever handbrake. The dual-clutch cars of the 2021 upgraded range list electric power steering and an electric parking brake. Check the car rather than guessing from the year. A power-steering fluid reservoir under the bonnet means a hydraulic rack with a pump and pressure hoses. A lever between the front seats means a cable handbrake, and a switch means an electric one, which uses different rear calipers.
The body changed once. The upgraded car of August 2020, sold as the 2021 model, is 4,710 mm long against 4,680 mm for earlier cars, on the same 2,785 mm wheelbase and 1,810 mm width. The extra length sits in the front and rear ends, so bumper covers and the parts that fix to them are where the two differ. Read the build date on the identification plate before ordering them.
The engine came in two outputs from the same 1,497 cc size. Earlier cars have the BYD476ZQA engine with 113 kW (154 PS), built to China 5. The upgraded 2021 car has 118 kW (160 PS) and 245 Nm and meets China 6. China 6 versions were already on sale in the 2019 model year, so the emission standard does not mark the facelift. Match engine sensors and emission parts to the engine fitted.
A few things vary from car to car. The seat layout is either seven seats or six with two middle-row captain's chairs, and the middle-row seats, fixings and trim differ between them. Factory tables give 215/55 R17 tyres, but read the size on the sidewall before ordering tyres or rims. For painted panels, order by the colour code on the car rather than by colour name.
Before You Order: 8 Checks
- Check the body for a charging flap. If there is one, the car is a plug-in version, so use the listings for that car instead.
- Match the OE number on the part you are replacing to the OE number on the listing before you order.
- Look for a power-steering fluid reservoir under the bonnet and a handbrake lever between the front seats, then order steering and rear brake parts to suit what you find.
- The August 2020 upgrade made the car 30 mm longer, so read the build date on the identification plate before ordering a bumper or its fittings.
- Confirm whether the engine is the 154 PS or the 160 PS version before ordering sensors or emission parts.
- Read the tyre size on the sidewall before ordering tyres or wheels, and do not take wheels or discs from a plug-in version.
- Count the seats before ordering middle-row seats or trim, since six-seat and seven-seat cars differ there.
- Order painted panels by the colour code on the car rather than by colour name.
Generations and Facelifts
The Song MAX went on sale in China in September 2017. It is a compact MPV designed under Wolfgang Egger and sold with six or seven seats. It takes the Song name from BYD's SUV range but is a separate car on its own 2,785 mm wheelbase. At launch it had a 1,497 cc turbocharged petrol engine with 113 kW (154 PS), built to the China 5 emission standard, and a six-speed manual or six-speed dual-clutch gearbox.
A 118 kW (160 PS) version of the engine followed, and the 2020 model year automatic listed it. The two versions share a displacement, so engine sensors, emission hardware and ancillaries should be matched to the engine fitted rather than to the year.
From 2019 the petrol car was joined by the Song MAX DM plug-in hybrid and the Song MAX EV. They share the body but not the running gear, and they need their own wheels, brakes and cooling parts.
The upgraded car arrived in August 2020 and was sold as the 2021 model. It grew from 4,680 mm to 4,710 mm long on the same wheelbase and width. It met the China 6 emission standard, but China 6 versions were already on sale in the 2019 model year. Its dual-clutch versions list electric power steering and an electric parking brake. For parts, the bumpers are the main break, so read the build date on the identification plate before ordering them. DM-i plug-in hybrids followed, and petrol production ended in March 2022. The petrol car had this one facelift and no other body change.
In May 2024 BYD launched the M6 and eMax 7 for export markets. These battery-electric MPVs on e-Platform 3.0 follow the Song MAX's shape but share no powertrain parts with the petrol car, so treat them as different cars.
BYD Song Max Parts: Frequently Asked Questions
How do I make sure a part fits my BYD Song MAX?
Match the OE number. Every part on this site is listed under the OE number printed on the original part, and if the number on the part you are replacing matches the listing, the part fits. That check matters on the Song MAX because two gearboxes, two engine outputs, a facelift and several plug-in versions all share one name. If the old part is missing or its number cannot be read, send a photo of it through the quote form and we will reply within 24 hours, usually sooner.
Do parts from a Song MAX DM or Song MAX EV fit the petrol car?
Some body parts may, but much of the running gear does not. The plug-in hybrid and electric versions were sold alongside the petrol car on the same 2,785 mm wheelbase. They carry batteries, electric motors and their own cooling hardware, and the later plug-in hybrids are listed on 18 and 19 inch wheels against 17 inch on the petrol car. Never assume brake discs, wheels, underbody or cooling parts cross over. Confirm the car has no charging flap, then match each part by OE number.
Is the BYD M6 or eMax 7 the same car as a Song MAX?
No. The M6 and eMax 7 are sold outside China. Both arrived in May 2024 as battery-electric MPVs on BYD's e-Platform 3.0. They follow the Song MAX's shape but have none of the petrol car's engine, gearbox, fuel or exhaust hardware, so a reference number from one of them belongs to a different car. For the petrol Song MAX, order using the OE number on the part you are replacing.
Does my Song MAX have a power-steering pump?
It depends on the car. Factory tables list mechanical hydraulic power steering on the 2017 manual car and electric power steering on the dual-clutch cars of the 2021 upgraded range. A hydraulic system has a pump, pressure hoses and a fluid reservoir, while an electric system has none of these. The quickest check is under the bonnet. If there is a power-steering fluid reservoir, the car has a hydraulic rack. Confirm which system is fitted before ordering any steering part, then match it by OE number.
Why do some Song MAX cars have a handbrake lever and others an electric parking brake?
The factory tables list a lever handbrake on the manual car and an electric parking brake on the dual-clutch cars of the 2021 upgraded range. The two systems use different rear calipers and different parking brake hardware, so their parts do not swap. Look between the front seats. A lever means a cable handbrake and a switch means an electric one. Then order rear calipers, pads and parking brake parts to suit the system fitted, matching each by OE number.
What is the difference between the 154 PS and 160 PS Song MAX?
Both use a 1,497 cc turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine. Earlier cars have the BYD476ZQA engine, with 113 kW (154 PS) and 240 Nm, built to the China 5 emission standard. The upgraded 2021 car has 118 kW (160 PS) and 245 Nm and meets China 6, although China 6 versions were already on sale in the 2019 model year. Engine sensors, emission parts and some ancillaries can differ between the two. Check which engine the car carries, then match those parts by the OE number on the old part.
Did the Song MAX have a facelift, and does it change parts?
Yes, once. An upgraded car arrived in August 2020 and was sold as the 2021 model. Its length grew from 4,680 mm to 4,710 mm, but the 2,785 mm wheelbase and 1,810 mm width stayed the same, so the extra length sits in the front and rear ends. The bumper covers and the parts that fix to them are where the two versions differ. Read the build date on the identification plate before ordering a bumper or its fittings, and match the part by OE number.
What tyre size does the Song MAX use?
Factory tables list 215/55 R17 front and rear on the petrol Song MAX, on 17 inch alloy wheels, for both early and upgraded cars. One fitment guide lists other sizes, so read the size on the sidewall of the tyres already fitted before you order tyres or rims. Do not take wheels or brake discs from the later plug-in hybrid versions, which are listed on 18 and 19 inch wheels. Once you know the size, order tyres and rims to match it.
Six seats or seven: does it matter for parts?
It matters for the cabin. The Song MAX was sold as a seven-seater and as a six-seater with two captain's chairs in the middle row. The body shell is the same, but the middle-row seats, their fixings and the trim around them can differ between the two layouts. Count the seats in the car before ordering anything for the middle row. Then match each part by the OE number on the part you are replacing rather than by a description of the seat.
What service parts does the petrol Song MAX need?
The same as any turbocharged petrol car. The 1,497 cc engine has direct injection and a turbocharger with an intercooler. It needs engine oil, an oil filter, an air filter, spark plugs and a cabin filter at regular intervals, plus coolant for the engine and turbocharger circuits. The earliest cars date from 2017, and gaskets and seals are needed more often as cars age. Match plugs and filters to the engine fitted, then order each by OE number.
Does the Song MAX carry a spare wheel?
The factory tables for the manual car list a spare wheel that is not full size. It is a space-saver for short distances and will not match the 215/55 R17 tyres on the car, so do not use it as a permanent replacement. If you need a road wheel or tyre, read the size on the tyres already fitted and order to that size. For the spare itself, check that it is still in the car, then match any replacement by OE number.
Why do springs and suspension mounts wear on the Song MAX?
The Song MAX has McPherson struts at the front and a torsion-beam axle at the rear, and its body is built for six or seven people and their luggage. A car that often runs full puts steady load through the springs, the front top mounts and the rear axle bushes. The usual signs are a sagging rear, knocks over bumps and uneven tyre wear. Check the mount and bushes as well as the spring, since a worn mount can change the ride as much as the spring does. Order each part by side and OE number.
