About Switches, Relays & Fuses

Switches on a modern vehicle rarely carry the current they command. A window switch tells a door module what the occupant wants, and the module drives the motor, which means the switch handles a signal rather than a load and can therefore be smaller and last longer. That change also alters how faults present: a failed switch produces no response at all rather than a burnt contact, and the module reports the input as absent. Fuse boxes have evolved similarly, combining conventional blade fuses and relays with solid state outputs that switch and monitor current electronically, so a circuit can be protected, diagnosed and reset without a physical fuse. Horns, brake lamp switches and hazard switches remain closer to their traditional form, since each has to work when everything else has failed.

What to know before buying Switches, Relays & Fuses parts

Check the fuse and the connector before you order a switch. A blown fuse is a symptom of something else and worth investigating.

Order by the OE number, and by trim colour where the switch forms part of a visible panel. Switch sets differ by specification and finish.

The range is broad. It holds engine bay fuse box bodies with their brackets and instrument panel fuse box assemblies. Front and rear door window switch sets, combination switches and steering wheel switch sets follow. Hazard warning lamp switches, brake lamp switches and trim mounted switch sets with their panels are listed too. High tone, snail and low note horns round it off. That breadth reflects how these faults arrive: one dead window, one dead horn note, a brake lamp that stays on.

Priced listings can be ordered from the page and anything else is quoted. Our BYD group coverage is the strongest, and more catalogues load over time. If a switch reference returns nothing today, send it through the quote form rather than substituting a similar looking part.

Before You Order: 6 Checks

  1. Check the fuse and the connector before ordering a switch.
  2. Match the OE number and the trim colour where the switch forms part of a visible panel.
  3. Confirm the specification, since switch sets differ with heated seats, mirrors and other options.
  4. Investigate repeated fuse failure rather than fitting a higher rating.
  5. Test each horn separately, since two units of different tones are usually fitted.
  6. Check the pedal stop before ordering a brake lamp switch, as a crumbled stop causes the same fault.

What Changed and Why

Physical switchgear is thinning out as functions migrate to touchscreens, and the pushback has begun: several safety authorities and consumer test programmes now expect physical controls for core functions such as hazard lamps, indicators, wipers and horn, which is likely to preserve the stalk and a small set of buttons rather than reverse the trend. Fuse boxes have moved further, with solid state outputs replacing fuses and relays on more circuits, so protection is electronic, resettable and diagnosable, and a dead circuit is increasingly a module output fault rather than a blown fuse.

Switches, Relays & Fuses: Frequently Asked Questions

One window works from the driver's switch but not its own.

That is the local switch or its wiring rather than the motor or the regulator, since the master switch proves the circuit and the mechanism both work. On most vehicles the local switch sends a signal to a door module, so the failure is usually a worn contact or a corroded connector at the switch. Check the connector for moisture first, since door switches sit where water reaches them. The switch set for that door is listed here as its own part.

My brake lamps stay on all the time. Which part?

Start with the pedal stop rather than the switch. The switch is held against the brake pedal by a small plunger, and it rests on a rubber or plastic stop on the pedal or the bulkhead that crumbles with age, letting the pedal sit a few millimetres lower so the switch never releases. That is a very cheap fix. If the stop is intact and correctly positioned, the switch itself has failed, and it is listed here separately.

A fuse keeps blowing. Can I fit a higher rating?

No, and it is worth being blunt about why. The fuse is sized to protect the wiring, not the component, so a higher rating lets a faulty circuit heat its cable until the insulation fails, which is how electrical fires start. A fuse that blows repeatedly is reporting a short or an overload, and the job is to find it. Disconnect the loads on that circuit one at a time, or use a controlled test lamp in place of the fuse to trace the fault.

Why does my horn sound weak or wrong?

Because most vehicles fit two horns of different tones and one has failed, leaving a thin single note where a chord should be. They sit low at the front where road spray reaches them, so corrosion at the connector or inside the horn is common. Check both connectors and the earth, then test each horn directly with a fused supply. The high tone and low note units are listed separately here, so you replace only the one that has gone.

My indicator stalk has stopped working. Is that the whole switch?

Usually, since the combination switch is supplied as an assembly containing the indicator, lighting, wiper and often cruise functions. Before ordering, check whether the fault is in the switch or downstream, since a lamp control module or a bulb failure can produce similar symptoms. Note also that the clock spring behind the steering wheel carries these circuits on many vehicles, so a fault affecting the horn and the wheel buttons as well points there rather than at the stalk.

What do these parts cost?

Fuses and relays are the cheapest items on the site and it is worth keeping a few spares in the car. Brake lamp switches and hazard switches are similar. Window switches, horns and combination switches climb from there, and the most expensive parts here are complete steering wheel switch sets and fuse box assemblies. The band above carries today's figures. Before buying a switch set, check the individual switch is available on its own, because on many vehicles the panel is modular and only the failed button needs replacing.

Can I replace a fuse box?

The bodies and brackets, yes, with care and photographs. What complicates it is that on many vehicles the fuse box is not simply a passive board: it contains relays, solid state outputs and sometimes a control module, so replacing it can require coding and the transfer of configuration. Read the listing to see whether you are ordering a body, a bracket or a complete assembly, and confirm the coding requirement before starting rather than after the old one is out.

Why is a switch specific to trim colour?

Because on many vehicles the switch is part of a visible panel rather than a hidden component, and the factory produces it in the interior colours the vehicle was sold in. A functionally identical switch in the wrong shade sits in the door card looking obviously wrong. Where the listing names a colour, match it against your vehicle's build record rather than judging from a photograph, since interior greys and blacks are difficult to distinguish on screen.

How do I test a relay?

The simplest method is substitution: swap it with an identical relay serving a non critical circuit and see whether the fault moves. Failing that, check that the coil has continuity, that it clicks when energised, and that the switched contacts pass current under load rather than simply showing continuity on a meter. Pitted contacts often pass a meter test and fail under real current, which is why substitution is more reliable than bench testing for an intermittent fault.

Will a switch from a higher specification fit?

It may fit the aperture and disappoint you electrically. Switch sets vary with the options a vehicle carries, so a set from a car with mirror folding, heated glass or memory functions has additional circuits the loom does not supply, and buttons that do nothing. It may also report on a different scale to the door module. Match the OE number and the specification, and use the quote form where the reference brings back nothing.

Are solid state fuse boxes different to work on?

In diagnosis rather than in access. Where a circuit is protected by an electronic output rather than a fuse, there is nothing to inspect visually and no fuse to replace: the module detects an overload, shuts that output down and reports it, and the circuit is restored electronically once the fault is cleared. That means a dead circuit needs a scan tool to identify rather than a torch and a fuse puller, and it makes reading the fault memory the first step rather than the last.

The part I need shows no price. Can I still order it?

Yes. Switch panels vary with equipment level, so a window switch from a car with folding mirrors is a different reference from one without, and the rarer variants sit unpriced. Send the number from the back of the old switch and say how many buttons it carries. Relays and fuses are cheap and usually priced. Where a switch has stopped working, check the connector before ordering, since a pushed back terminal in the plug produces the same dead button and costs nothing to correct. Ask for the fuse box cover if the label has become unreadable.
