About 12V Battery & Terminals

Every vehicle, including one with a large traction pack, carries a low voltage battery, and it does far more than turn a starter motor. It powers the control units that wake the vehicle up, holds the contactors closed once the high voltage system is live, runs the lighting, the locking and the infotainment, and keeps memory alive while the vehicle sleeps. On a battery electric vehicle the low voltage supply is normally maintained by a converter drawing from the traction pack, so the battery spends most of its life floating rather than cycling, and when it fails the symptoms are dramatic: a car that will not respond to the key, will not wake and shows no sign of the several hundred volts sitting healthy underneath it. Lithium iron phosphate is displacing lead acid in this role, being lighter, longer lived and better behaved in cold weather.

What to know before buying 12V Battery & Terminals parts

Order by the factory part number. Case size, terminal layout, capacity and chemistry all follow the vehicle. A lithium battery cannot stand in for a lead acid one where the charging strategy expects lead acid. Many vehicles also need the new battery registering so that strategy resets.

You will find batteries here, including lithium iron phosphate starter batteries and complete battery assemblies. Alongside them sit battery trays, upper and lower brackets, hold down plates and hooks. Negative cables in numbered variants and backup power supplies are listed too.

Those mounting parts matter more than they look. A battery that moves chafes its cables and cracks its case. Trays corrode from the acid and moisture that collect in them.

Anything shown with a price can be ordered from the listing, and anything without one is quoted. BYD group parts are covered most fully at present, and that widens as more catalogues load. If a reference returns nothing today, send it through the quote form.

Before You Order: 6 Checks

  1. Match the OE number, since case size, terminal layout, capacity and chemistry all follow the vehicle.
  2. Do not substitute lithium for lead acid unless the vehicle was built for it.
  3. Check whether your vehicle requires battery registration after replacement.
  4. Use a memory saver or auxiliary supply during replacement where the manufacturer specifies one.
  5. Inspect the tray and hold-down, since a battery that moves damages its own cables.
  6. Clean or replace corroded terminals and cables rather than reusing them.

What Changed and Why

The low voltage battery has become the most common cause of an electric vehicle refusing to start, which is an irony worth understanding: the traction pack is fine and the twelve volt supply that wakes everything up is not. Manufacturers have responded by moving to lithium iron phosphate auxiliary batteries, which are lighter, tolerate the float duty better and last longer, and by adding strategies that top the auxiliary battery up from the traction pack while the vehicle sleeps. Battery registration after replacement has also spread from European combustion vehicles to electric ones.

12V Battery & Terminals: Frequently Asked Questions

My electric car will not wake up. Is the traction battery flat?

Probably not. The most common cause by a wide margin is a failed or discharged twelve volt battery, because that is what powers the control units, the locking and the contactors that connect the traction pack. The pack can be full and the car completely dead. The symptoms are unmistakable once you know them: doors ignoring the key, screens dark, no ready light. Most vehicles provide a documented jump point for exactly this situation, described in the handbook.

Why do these batteries fail on cars that are barely used?

Because the duty is unusual. In a combustion car the battery is deeply discharged by starting and then recharged hard by the alternator. In an electric vehicle it floats at a steady voltage, supplied by a converter from the traction pack, and it is asked to support periods of vehicle sleep where small loads drain it slowly. Lead acid batteries dislike sitting partially discharged, so a vehicle used briefly and infrequently is harder on the battery than one driven daily.

Can I fit a lithium battery in place of a lead acid one?

Only where the vehicle was designed for it. The charging strategy, the voltage thresholds and the sleep management are all set for a particular chemistry, and a lithium battery in a system expecting lead acid may be undercharged, overcharged or misjudged for state of charge. Where the manufacturer fitted lithium iron phosphate, the catalogue lists it. Where it fitted lead acid, order the same type and match the capacity, since a smaller battery will not support the sleep loads.

What is battery registration and do I need it?

It is the procedure that tells the vehicle a new battery has been fitted, so the charging strategy resets its assumptions about age and capacity rather than continuing to treat the new battery as an old one. Many European combustion vehicles have required it for years and it has spread to electric vehicles. Skipping it typically shortens the new battery's life rather than causing an immediate fault. Check the requirement for your vehicle before starting, since it usually needs a scan tool.

Why do I get several unrelated warnings at once?

Because control units need stable voltage to behave predictably, and a weak battery cannot hold it under load. What follows is a scatter of faults across systems that have nothing to do with each other, sometimes including high voltage warnings, because those modules also run on twelve volts. Test the battery properly under load before chasing any of the individual codes. A great many expensive diagnostic trails have ended at a tired auxiliary battery.

What do these parts cost?

Hold down plates, brackets, hooks and cables sit at the bottom of the range. Battery trays are modest. Batteries themselves cost the most in this category, with lithium iron phosphate types above lead acid equivalents. The live minimum and maximum are shown in the band at the top of this page. Given how many faults a weak auxiliary battery produces, replacing one that has served its time is among the cheapest reliability improvements available.

Can I change the battery myself?

On most vehicles yes, with two cautions. Use a memory saver or an auxiliary supply where the manufacturer specifies one, because control units losing power can lose adaptations and settings that are tedious to restore. And check whether registration is required, since without a scan tool that step is not possible at home. Disconnect the negative terminal first and reconnect it last, keep tools away from the positive terminal and surrounding metal, and torque the clamps rather than overtightening them.

Why does the tray corrode?

Because it collects everything that escapes from the battery and the weather. Lead acid batteries vent a small amount of acidic vapour, which condenses on the tray and the surrounding metal, and water finds its way in through the same openings that let the vapour out. Once the coating on the tray is breached the corrosion accelerates. Clean and neutralise any residue when changing a battery, check the drain holes, and replace a tray that has thinned rather than painting over it.

What is a backup power supply for?

On some vehicles it is a small secondary supply that keeps critical functions alive if the main twelve volt supply fails, typically the systems needed to bring the vehicle safely to a stop and to allow emergency calls or door release. It is a safety related component rather than a convenience, listed here as its own part. If your vehicle reports a fault against it, treat it as a repair to make rather than something to postpone.

My battery keeps going flat. Where do I start?

With a parasitic drain test after excluding the battery itself, since a tired battery and a genuine drain produce the same symptom. A workshop measures the current the vehicle draws once it has gone fully to sleep, which takes patience because modules shut down in stages, then isolates circuits to find the offender. Common causes are a module that will not sleep, a door or boot switch reporting open, or an aftermarket accessory wired to a permanent supply.

Will a battery from another model fit?

Only where the case size, terminal type and position, capacity and chemistry all agree. Terminals on the wrong side leave the cables short, a taller case fouls the bonnet or the cover, and a lower capacity battery will not support the vehicle's sleep loads. Match the OE number rather than the dimensions alone, and where the reference brings back nothing, send it through the quote form so the catalogue is checked against your vehicle.

The part I need shows no price. Can I still order it?

Yes. Every reference here exists in the factory catalogue under its OE number, and batteries in particular sometimes carry no standing price because shipping restrictions and availability vary. Press request a quote on the listing and a current figure comes back matched on the same number, including any transport constraints. Ask for the hold down and tray at the same time if either is corroded, since fitting a new battery into a damaged mounting is a false economy.
