Symptom Finder: Known Weak Points
| What you see or hear | Check first |
|---|---|
| Dual-clutch car jerks, slips or will not select a gear | The electro-hydraulic module and the dual clutch. Gearbox faults lead owner complaints on the G6, so have the gearbox read, then match the failed part by OE number. |
| Oil spots under the engine | Gaskets and seals on the engine fitted. Oil leaks are a recurring owner complaint, so identify the engine by counting the gears, trace the leak, then order seals by OE number. |
| Falling coolant level or a damp radiator | The radiator, hoses and expansion tank. Owners report radiator leaks, so inspect the core and hose joints before ordering by OE number. |
| Whining, heavy or leaking steering | The hydraulic power steering pump, the fluid level and the hoses. The G6 has no electric steering motor, so start with the pump and fluid. |
| Knocks or wandering from the rear over bumps | The five-link rear suspension arms and bushes. Several arms sit on each side, so find the worn one and order it by position and OE number. |
| Turbo car short of power, with smoke or rising oil use | The turbocharger, its oil feed and the intake pipes on the 1.5 turbo. Check the hoses for splits before replacing the turbo itself. |
| Engine warning light on | Start with the lambda and engine sensors. For exhaust-side parts, read the build date, since some 2013 cars were built to a different emissions standard. |

About BYD G6 Parts
The BYD G6 is a four-door, five-seat mid-size saloon that BYD launched in China on 26 September 2011 as the successor to the F6. It is front-wheel drive, 4,860 mm long on a 2,745 mm wheelbase, and it was sold with two petrol engines. The first is a 1,991 cc naturally aspirated four-cylinder of Mitsubishi origin, paired with a five-speed manual. The second is BYD's own 1,497 cc turbocharged, direct-injection engine, paired with a six-speed manual or a six-speed dual-clutch gearbox. There is no hybrid or electric version. For parts, that makes the G6 a conventional petrol car, and most of what it needs depends on which engine and gearbox it has. Filters, engine internals, turbo parts and clutch hardware all differ between the two. Every part on this page is listed by its OE number, and matching the number on the old part is the surest way to confirm a fit.
What to know before buying BYD G6 parts
Start with the engine, because it divides the G6 into two cars. The 2.0 litre, engine code BYD483QB, makes 103 kW and was only sold with a five-speed manual. The 1.5 litre turbo, BYD476ZQA, makes 113 kW and always has six gears, as a manual or as a dual-clutch automatic. So a five-speed car is the 2.0 and any six-speed car is the turbo. Engine internals, filters, ignition parts, the turbocharger and its pipework, and the clutch all follow this split, so settle it before ordering anything from the engine back.
The dual-clutch car has parts the manuals never had: the dual clutch itself and the electro-hydraulic module that operates it. Gearbox faults are the most common owner complaint about the G6, so these are the parts most often wanted on the turbo automatic. A manual G6, whether 2.0 or turbo, takes a conventional clutch, and it should be matched by OE number to the gearbox actually fitted.
The body did not change across the sales listings we checked, which run from the 2011 to the 2013 model year. The car is 4,860 mm long, 1,825 mm wide and 1,463 mm high on a 2,745 mm wheelbase throughout, so panels, glass and trim do not split by model year within that span. The F6 before it and the more upmarket Sirui sold alongside it are separate models with their own styling. Do not assume their panels, lamps or glass fit a G6, and match those parts by OE number. Take the same care with any G6 that has a different front end, since a restyled car was photographed in testing in early 2014.
Under the car, the rear suspension is an independent five-link layout. That puts several arms and bushes on each side, and each one should be matched by its position. Steering is hydraulically assisted, so the parts that wear are the pump, the rack and the hoses, with no electric motor involved. Tyres are 205/60 R16 front and rear on every version listed, and the spare sits on a 15-inch steel rim, so do not size road tyres from the spare.
Two things vary from car to car. Cars were built to China IV emissions, and some 2013 cars to China V, so read the build date on the identification plate before ordering exhaust, catalyst or lambda sensor parts. For painted panels, order by the colour code on the car rather than by colour name. When searching, remember that XPeng also sells a car called the G6. Its parts have nothing in common with this BYD.
Before You Order: 7 Checks
- Count the gearbox ratios before ordering engine or clutch parts: five speeds means the 2.0 litre and six means the 1.5 turbo, so order for that engine.
- Match the OE number on the part you are replacing to the OE number on the listing, since a matching number is the surest check of fit.
- Check whether a six-speed car is a manual or a dual-clutch before ordering clutch parts, and only order the electro-hydraulic module for a dual-clutch car.
- Read the build date on the identification plate before ordering exhaust, catalyst or lambda sensor parts, since some 2013 cars were built to China V.
- Check that the tyre sidewall reads 205/60 R16 before ordering tyres or rims, and do not size road tyres from the 15-inch spare.
- Order painted panels by the colour code on the car, not by colour name.
- Only order an F6, Sirui or XPeng G6 part for a BYD G6 if its OE number matches the old part.
Generations and Facelifts
The G6 replaced the BYD F6, the brand's earlier mid-size saloon, and sat above it as a better-equipped car. It was launched in China on 26 September 2011. The 2.0 litre manual was the entry model, and BYD's new 1.5 litre turbo with a dual-clutch gearbox was the headline powertrain. On 3 April 2012 BYD listed the G6 TID, the fully equipped turbo dual-clutch version, whose name stands for turbo, direct injection and dual clutch. A six-speed manual version of the turbo was sold as well. BYD also sold the Sirui, a more upmarket relative of the G6 with different styling and equipment.
Chinese sales listings show three model years, 2011, 2012 and 2013. All three have the same body and the same two engines. Some 2013 cars were built to China V emissions instead of China IV. That matters for exhaust and sensor parts but not for the body.
In January 2014 a restyled G6 was photographed in testing. It had a new chromed grille, a sportier front bumper, five-spoke alloy wheels and a new 2.0 litre turbo engine with a dual-clutch gearbox. One English source records this as an October 2014 facelift, but the Chinese sales listings we checked show no G6 model year after 2013. If the front of a car does not match the earlier design, order every front-end part by OE number rather than by model name. No later car carried the G6 name. BYD's next mid-size saloon, the Han, arrived in 2020 as a separate design.
BYD G6 Parts: Frequently Asked Questions
How do I make sure a part fits my BYD G6?
Match the OE number. Every part on this site is listed under the OE number printed on the original part, and if the number on the part you are replacing matches the listing, the part fits. On the G6 this check matters most for engine, clutch and gearbox parts, because the car was built with two different engines and three gearboxes. If the old part is missing or its number cannot be read, send a photo of it through the quote form and we will reply within 24 hours, usually sooner.
How do I tell a 1.5 turbo G6 from a 2.0 without opening the bonnet?
Count the gears. The 2.0 litre BYD483QB engine was only sold with a five-speed manual gearbox. The 1.5 litre turbo, the BYD476ZQA, always had six ratios, as a manual or as a dual-clutch automatic. So a five-speed G6 is a 2.0, any six-speed G6 is a turbo, and a G6 with no clutch pedal is always the turbo. Once you know the engine, confirm each engine or clutch part by the OE number on the old one.
Was there ever a 2.0 turbo G6?
In January 2014 a restyled G6 was photographed in testing with a new 2.0 litre turbo engine, a dual-clutch gearbox, a chromed grille and a sportier bumper. One English source records it as an October 2014 facelift, but the Chinese sales listings we checked show only the 2011, 2012 and 2013 model years, each with the 2.0 litre and the 1.5 turbo. Treat the 2.0 turbo as rare at best. If you believe you have one, order every engine and front-end part by the OE number on the old part.
My dual-clutch G6 jerks, slips or will not select a gear. What should I order?
Diagnose the fault before you order. Gearbox faults are the most common owner complaint on the G6. On the dual-clutch car, the parts usually in question are the dual clutch and the electro-hydraulic module that operates it. A module fault can feel like a worn clutch, so have the gearbox read before buying either. Both parts belong only to the turbo dual-clutch car, and neither fits a manual G6. Once the faulty part is found, match it by the OE number on the unit removed.
Does the G6 use electric power steering?
No. The G6 uses hydraulic power steering, with an engine-driven pump, a hydraulic rack and hoses between them. There is no electric motor on the column. When the steering starts to whine, feel heavy or leak, check the pump, the fluid and the hoses before looking at anything electrical. Look at the fluid level and check for wet hoses first. Then order the pump, rack or hose by the OE number on the part you are replacing.
What tyre size does the G6 use?
205/60 R16 front and rear, on every G6 version in the listings we checked, both 2.0 and turbo. The spare sits on a 15-inch steel rim, so do not size a road tyre from the spare wheel. A previous owner may have fitted larger wheels, so read the sidewall of the tyres on the car. If they are not 205/60 R16, decide whether to go back to the original size before you order tyres or rims.
Will F6 or Sirui parts fit my G6?
Do not assume so. The F6 came before the G6, and the Sirui was sold alongside it as a more upmarket saloon with its own styling. The three cars come from the same maker and the same period, and some mechanical parts may be shared, but body panels, lamps, glass and trim differ in shape. The OE number is the only safe test. If the number on your old part matches the listing, the part fits, whichever model the listing names. If it does not match, look for the G6 listing instead.
Is the BYD G6 the same car as the XPeng G6?
No. XPeng, a different Chinese carmaker, sells an electric SUV also called the G6, and it has nothing in common with the BYD G6 saloon. Searches for G6 parts often mix the two, especially in Chinese-language results. Check that a listing names BYD as the maker and that its OE number matches the part on your car. If you are unsure which car a part came from, send a photo of it through the quote form and we will reply within 24 hours, usually sooner.
What changed between the 2011, 2012 and 2013 model years?
Very little that affects the body. Every G6 we could trace measures 4,860 mm long, 1,825 mm wide and 1,463 mm high on a 2,745 mm wheelbase, and all three model years use the same two engines. The fully equipped TID version, with the turbo and dual-clutch gearbox, was listed on 3 April 2012. Some 2013 cars were built to China V emissions rather than China IV, which can change exhaust and sensor parts. Read the build date on the identification plate before ordering those parts, and match everything else by OE number.
Is there a hybrid or electric G6?
No. Every BYD G6 has a petrol engine driving the front wheels, either the 2.0 litre naturally aspirated engine or the 1.5 litre turbo. That makes it a conventional car to service. It needs engine oil, oil and air filters, spark plugs and coolant. On the turbo, the oil supply matters as well, because the turbocharger depends on it. Service parts differ between the two engines, so count the gears to identify the engine, then order each filter or plug by the OE number on the old one.
What rear suspension does the G6 have?
An independent five-link layout, which puts several separate arms and bushes on each side of the rear axle. This matters when ordering, because each arm is a different part with its own position on the car. Knocks, wandering or uneven tyre wear from the rear usually point to worn bushes or a damaged arm. Check each arm in turn, note which one has failed and on which side, and match it by the OE number on the part.
Do the two G6 engines share engine and clutch parts?
Very few engine parts are shared. The 2.0 litre is a Mitsubishi-derived design and the 1.5 turbo is BYD's own, so treat pistons, valvetrain, gaskets, filters and sensors as specific to each engine. The clutches differ too, since the 2.0 uses a five-speed manual and the turbo a six-speed manual or a dual clutch. Identify the engine by counting the gears, then order by the OE number on the old part. If the number cannot be read, ask through the quote form.
Safety Recalls Affecting This Model
If you have been told otherwise, check the source names the G6 directly and quotes a part number against one of this car's own prefixes (10, 11, 12 or 13). A reference to a steering column or a torque sensor is a sign the source is talking about the F3-R or F3DM, not this car.
