Symptom Finder: Known Weak Points

What you see or hearCheck first
Petrol engine starts while the battery still has charge This can be normal on a plug-in hybrid, as the engine also runs for heating, extra power and its own upkeep. If a warning light comes on as well, start with the engine sensors.
Engine warning light while the petrol engine is running Start with the lambda and emission sensors on the 1.5-litre engine, which are the usual first suspects. Order the replacement by the OE number on the old sensor.
Coolant warning or a falling coolant level Check the hoses, the expansion tank and the temperature sensors. The car has separate engine and electric-drive cooling, so trace the leak to its circuit before ordering.
Brake judder, squeal or uneven pedal feel Check the pads and discs. First confirm whether the car is front-drive or all-wheel drive, as the all-wheel-drive car is heavier and uses different parts.
Parking sensor or driver-assistance warning after a minor knock Check the sensors in the bumpers and their brackets. A bent bracket can set off the warning by itself, so check it before replacing the sensor.
Cracked lamp lens or moisture inside a headlight or tail lamp Replace the lamp assembly. Headlights and tail lamps changed at the June 2023 facelift, so confirm which body the car has.
A new bumper will not line up with the car The part is probably for the other body. The early car is 4,705 mm long and the later one 4,775 mm on the same wheelbase, so match the bumper to the body.

About BYD Seal U DM-i Parts

The BYD Seal U DM-i is the plug-in hybrid version of BYD's mid-size SUV. China sells it as the Song PLUS DM-i, and some other markets sell it as the Sealion 6. It sits on a 2,765 mm wheelbase and is 4,775 mm long in its current form. Most cars drive the front wheels through a single 145 kW electric motor. A naturally aspirated 1.5-litre petrol engine charges an 18.3 kWh or 26.6 kWh Blade battery and can also drive the wheels. The all-wheel-drive version has a turbocharged 1.5-litre engine and adds a 120 kW rear motor. The car therefore needs two kinds of parts: the battery, motor and cooling hardware of an electric car, and the oil, filters, timing parts and sensors of a petrol engine. Every part on this page is listed by its OE number, and matching the number on the old part is the surest check that a new one fits.

What to know before buying BYD Seal U DM-i parts

Start with the name. China sells this car as the Song PLUS DM-i, and some other markets sell it as the Seal U DM-i or the Sealion 6. Trim names such as Glory Edition are versions of the same car. A part for your car may be listed under any of the three model names, so search under all of them. Then confirm the part by the OE number on the one you are replacing.

The body changed in June 2023, and more wrong orders come from this change than from anything else. The Champion Edition facelift gave the car a new front end with headlights in the style of the BYD Seal, new bumpers and a single tail lamp unit. It also put the BYD logo where the Song emblem used to be. Length went from 4,705 mm to 4,775 mm, while the 2,765 mm wheelbase and 1,890 mm width stayed the same. Bumpers, grilles, headlights, tail lamps and the panels and trim around them are therefore specific to one side of the change. Cars sold outside China all have the later body, so the earlier parts mostly apply to cars from China. If you are unsure, read the build date on the identification plate. Order painted panels by the colour code on the car.

The badge will not tell you the drive layout. Front-drive cars have a naturally aspirated 1.5-litre engine and one front motor. The all-wheel-drive car has a turbocharged 1.5-litre engine, a 150 kW front motor and a 120 kW rear motor, and weighs about 2,100 kg against 1,940 kg for a front-drive car. The 18.3 kWh battery is fitted to both, so battery size does not tell you which one you have. Look under the back of the car for the rear drive unit before you order engine, cooling, brake or rear axle parts.

A few other things vary from car to car. Some front-drive cars have the larger 26.6 kWh battery. Match battery and charging parts by OE number rather than by capacity. Chinese cars from the February 2025 Smart Driving edition have extra driver-assistance hardware. On those cars, a windscreen or front-end repair can need sensor or camera brackets as well as the panel. There is no spare wheel, only a tyre repair kit, so read the tyre size on the sidewall before ordering.

Before You Order: 7 Checks

  1. Search under all three names, Seal U DM-i, Song PLUS DM-i and Sealion 6, then confirm the part by the OE number on the one you are replacing.
  2. Check whether the car has the early 4,705 mm body or the later 4,775 mm body before ordering bumpers, grilles, lamps or trim.
  3. Look for a rear drive unit between the rear wheels before ordering engine, cooling, brake or rear axle parts.
  4. Do not work out the drive layout from the battery size. Order battery and charging parts by OE number.
  5. Read the tyre size on the sidewall before ordering tyres or wheels, and keep in mind that the car has no spare wheel.
  6. Order painted panels by the colour code on the car rather than by colour name.
  7. After a bumper or windscreen repair, check the sensors, cameras and their brackets, and order each by the OE number on the old unit.

Generations and Facelifts

The Song PLUS was launched in China in September 2020 as a petrol SUV, and the DM-i plug-in hybrid followed in March 2021. That first DM-i was 4,705 mm long on a 2,765 mm wheelbase. It had an 8.3 kWh or 18.3 kWh battery and a naturally aspirated 1.5-litre engine, with one motor driving the front wheels. An all-wheel-drive version with a turbocharged 1.5-litre engine and a rear motor was sold alongside it. A battery-electric Song PLUS EV was added in April 2021 on the same wheelbase.

The only facelift arrived on 19 June 2023 as the Champion Edition. It brought a new front end with Seal-style headlights, new bumpers and a single tail lamp unit, and put the BYD logo in place of the Song emblem. Length grew to 4,775 mm and height fell to 1,670 mm. For parts, this facelift is where bumpers, grilles, lamps and the panels around them split. The Glory Edition in February 2024 kept the same body and the same 145 kW motor.

In China, the Smart Driving edition went on sale on 10 February 2025 with BYD's newer driver-assistance system. In January 2026 BYD took the Song PLUS out of its Chinese range and replaced it with the Sealion 06. Outside China the car has been sold since 2024 as the Seal U DM-i or the Sealion 6, always with the later body. Before ordering body or lamp parts, check which side of June 2023 the car was built on.

BYD Seal U DM-i Parts: Frequently Asked Questions

How do I make sure a part fits my Seal U DM-i?

Match the OE number. Every part on this site is listed under the OE number printed on the original part. If the number on the part you are replacing matches the listing, the part fits. This matters on this car because it is sold under three names and was reshaped in June 2023, so the name on a listing is not enough on its own. If the old part is missing or you cannot read its number, send a photo through the quote form and we will reply within 24 hours, usually sooner.

Are the Seal U DM-i, Song PLUS DM-i and Sealion 6 the same car?

Yes. They are the same plug-in hybrid SUV. China sells it as the Song PLUS DM-i, and some other markets sell it as the Seal U DM-i or the Sealion 6. Names such as Glory Edition in China are trims of the same car. Parts may therefore be listed under any of the three names. Search under each one, then confirm the part by the OE number on the one you are replacing rather than by the name on the listing.

How do I tell the early body from the later one?

Look at the front and rear. The Champion Edition facelift of June 2023 brought headlights in the style of the BYD Seal, new bumpers and a single tail lamp unit, and replaced the Song emblem with the BYD logo. Length grew from 4,705 mm to 4,775 mm, but the wheelbase stayed at 2,765 mm, so measure the overall length rather than the gap between the wheels. Cars sold outside China all have the later body. For a car from China, read the build date on the identification plate before ordering.

Which parts changed at the 2023 facelift?

The parts at the front and rear of the car. The front and rear bumpers, the grille, the headlights and the tail lamps were all redesigned. The extra 70 mm of length is in the ends of the car, because the 2,765 mm wheelbase and 1,890 mm width stayed the same. The front-drive powertrain carried over, with the same 145 kW motor and naturally aspirated 1.5-litre engine. Treat any body, lamp or trim part as fitting only one side of the change, and match mechanical parts by OE number too.

How do I tell a front-drive car from an all-wheel-drive one?

Look under the back of the car. The all-wheel-drive car has a rear drive unit between the rear wheels and a turbocharged 1.5-litre engine at the front. It weighs about 2,100 kg against 1,940 kg for a front-drive car. Front-drive cars have a naturally aspirated 1.5-litre engine and one front motor. Check which one you have before ordering engine, cooling, brake or rear suspension parts, then match each part by OE number.

My car has the 18.3 kWh battery. Does that mean it is front-wheel drive?

No. The 18.3 kWh Blade battery is fitted to front-drive cars and also to the all-wheel-drive version. Battery size therefore tells you nothing about the drive layout. Some front-drive cars have the larger 26.6 kWh battery instead. Check the rear axle for a drive unit to find the drive layout. For battery, charging or high-voltage parts, match the OE number on the part fitted to the car rather than going by capacity.

Will parts from the electric Song PLUS EV fit my DM-i?

Some will. The electric car, sold as the Song PLUS EV in China and as the Seal U in some other markets, has the same 2,765 mm wheelbase and much of the same body as the plug-in hybrid. The front is different, because the electric car has a closed grille and the DM-i an open, frameless one. The electric car also has no engine, fuel system or exhaust parts at all. Cabin parts and some body parts may be shared, so confirm each one by OE number before ordering.

Do parts for the Song Pro or the Sealion 06 fit?

Do not assume they do. The Song Pro is a separate model with its own body, even though it also carries the Song name. The Sealion 06, launched in July 2025, replaced the Song PLUS in China and uses a newer platform and electrical system. Both are different cars from the Seal U DM-i, and a shared badge or engine size tells you little about whether a part is shared. If a listing names one of those models, compare its OE number with the part on your car before ordering.

Does the petrol engine need regular servicing if I mostly drive on electricity?

Yes. The 1.5-litre engine charges the battery and helps drive the car. It still needs engine oil, an oil filter, an air filter and spark plugs, and it has the timing drive, lambda sensors and exhaust that every petrol engine has. On a car driven mostly on battery power the engine covers fewer miles, but its oil and rubber parts still age over time. Follow the service schedule in the handbook for your car, and order filters and sensors by the OE number on the old part.

What tyres does it use, and is there a spare wheel?

On every trim we checked, the Chinese-market car runs 235/50 R19 tyres on 19-inch alloys, the same size as export cars. There is no spare wheel, only a tyre repair kit, so a damaged sidewall means buying a new tyre rather than fixing it at the roadside. Read the size on the sidewall before ordering, and match wheels and wheel sensors by OE number.

What should I check before fitting a tow bar?

Start with the handbook. The towing limit depends on the version, so take the limit for your own car from its handbook rather than from a listing. Tow bars, wiring and brackets fit around the rear of the car, which was reshaped at the June 2023 facelift, and the all-wheel-drive version also has a rear drive unit under the back. Check which body and drive layout the car has, then match any tow bar or bracket by OE number.

The Song PLUS was discontinued in China. Can I still get parts?

Yes. BYD took the Song PLUS out of its Chinese range in January 2026 and replaced it there with the Sealion 06. Export production continues, and the car has also been built at a BYD plant outside China since 2024. We found no source that says whether cars from different plants use different part numbers. Rather than assume either way, order by the OE number printed on the part you are replacing.
