Symptom Finder: Known Weak Points
| What you see or hear | Check first |
|---|---|
| Squeal or chirp from the front of the engine at start-up | The accessory drive belt and tensioner serving the 25 kW belt starter-generator. Inspect the belt for glazing or cracks, then order belt and tensioner by OE number. |
| Jerky take-off at low speed or harsh gear changes | The six-speed wet dual-clutch gearbox. Check the gearbox oil and filter service history first, since both are regular service items on this car, then order by OE number. |
| Engine warning light while the petrol engine is running | Start with the lambda and emission sensors and the ignition parts on the 2.0-litre turbo engine, the usual first suspects on any turbo petrol engine. Order each by the OE number on the old part. |
| Coolant warning or a falling coolant level | Hoses, the expansion tank and temperature sensors. The car cools an engine, a turbo, a rear motor and a battery, so trace the leak to its circuit before ordering. |
| Clicking or knocking from a wheel on full lock or under power | The CV joints and drive shafts. The car has four, a front pair and a rear pair, so identify the axle and side and order by OE number. |
| Brake judder or squeal | Pads and discs. The front discs are ventilated and the rear discs solid, so confirm which axle is at fault and order discs and pads for that axle. |
| A replacement tyre does not match the others | The Han DM uses 245/45 R19 tyres front and rear on both trims. Read the sidewall of the tyres fitted and order the same size. |

About BYD Han DM Parts
The BYD Han DM is the original plug-in hybrid version of the Han saloon. It went on sale in China in July 2020 alongside the all-electric Han EV, and the Han DM-i and Han DM-p replaced it in April 2022. Every car is four-wheel drive. A 1,999 cc turbocharged petrol engine drives the front wheels through a six-speed wet dual-clutch gearbox, helped by a 25 kW belt-driven starter-generator. A 180 kW electric motor drives the rear wheels, and a 15.2 kWh ternary lithium battery sits under the floor. The car therefore needs two sets of parts: the oil, filters, belt and gearbox parts of a petrol car, and the motor, battery and cooling parts of an electric one. Its engine, belt starter-generator and six-speed wet dual-clutch gearbox are shared with the 2021 2.0T Tang DM, which adds a 110 kW front motor, and no other Han uses them. Every part on this page is listed by its OE number, and matching that number to the old part is the surest way to confirm fit.
What to know before buying BYD Han DM parts
Start by making sure the car is the 2.0-litre Han DM. The badge alone can mislead, because the Han DM-i and Han DM-p that replaced it from April 2022 also carry DM on the boot. The DM-p uses a 1.5-litre turbo engine with BYD's EHS hybrid drive instead of a stepped gearbox, and a Blade battery. The engine bay settles it: a 2.0-litre engine with a six-speed dual-clutch gearbox behind it means a Han DM. The later cars also changed the grille pattern, the detailing on the front wings and the design of the full-width rear light, so a grille, wing trim or rear lamp from a 2022 or later Han should not be assumed to fit.
Nothing in the engine bay crosses to a later Han. The BYD487ZQB engine, the belt starter-generator and the six-speed wet dual-clutch gearbox are shared with the 2021 2.0T Tang DM SUV, so for engine ancillaries, gearbox service parts and mounts it is worth checking that car's listings too. The Tang adds a 110 kW front motor, and the earlier 2018 Tang DM used a different engine, the BYD487ZQA, so check the Tang's model year before using its listings. A saloon and an SUV can still use different mounts, brackets and pipework around the same engine, so match by OE number rather than by engine code.
The rear wheels are driven only by the 180 kW motor, and no propshaft joins the front and rear. Drive shafts and CV joints come as a front pair behind the gearbox and a rear pair behind the motor, so order them by axle and by side. The traction battery is a 15.2 kWh ternary lithium pack, not the Blade battery used in the Han EV and the later plug-in Hans. Battery modules, pack hardware and battery-cooling parts are specific to this car.
A few things vary from car to car. The Han DM uses 245/45 R19 tyres front and rear on both trims, so read the sidewall to confirm before ordering tyres or rims. There is no spare wheel. The brakes use ventilated discs at the front and solid discs at the rear, so a ventilated rear disc belongs to a different car. The doors are frameless with flush handles, so door glass, seals and handle parts should be ordered by side. For painted panels, order by the colour code on the car rather than by colour name.
The Han DM had no facelift, and we found no mid-life change that splits its parts by build date. The OE number on the old part remains the final check for every order.
Before You Order: 8 Checks
- Check under the bonnet for the 2.0-litre engine and six-speed dual-clutch gearbox, since a DM-i or DM-p has a different powertrain. Then order engine and gearbox parts for the Han DM only.
- Match the OE number on the part you are replacing to the OE number on the listing before you order.
- Confirm the tyre size on the sidewall reads 245/45 R19 before ordering tyres or rims.
- Look at the rear discs before ordering brake parts. They should be solid rather than ventilated, so order rear discs and pads to suit.
- For engine ancillaries, gearbox parts and mounts, search the 2021 2.0T Tang DM listings by OE number as well as the Han listings.
- Order battery parts for the 15.2 kWh ternary pack and never from Blade battery listings for a Han EV, DM-i or DM-p.
- Do not take a grille, front wing trim or rear lamp from a 2022 or later Han. Match each one by OE number.
- Order painted panels by the colour code on the car rather than by colour name.
Generations and Facelifts
BYD's Han saloon went on sale in China in July 2020 in two forms. The Han EV was fully electric and introduced the Blade battery. The Han DM was the plug-in hybrid. Its engine, belt starter-generator and gearbox were shared with BYD's 2021 2.0T Tang DM SUV, which added a 110 kW front motor. The Han DM paired a 141 kW 2.0-litre turbo engine, a 25 kW belt starter-generator and a six-speed wet dual-clutch gearbox driving the front wheels with a 180 kW motor on the rear axle, for a combined 321 kW. It used a 15.2 kWh ternary lithium battery rather than the Blade pack. It was sold in two trim levels, both four-wheel drive, with 245/45 R19 tyres front and rear on both.
On 10 April 2022 BYD launched the Han DM-i and Han DM-p, and the two took the Han DM's place. The DM-p uses a 1.5-litre turbo engine with BYD's EHS hybrid drive, a 37.5 kWh Blade battery and motors on both axles. The update also brought a new grille pattern, new detailing on the front wings and a redesigned full-width rear light. For parts, April 2022 is the dividing line in the Han range. Engine, gearbox, battery, grille and rear lamp parts from the later cars do not suit the Han DM.
Later changes, including the May 2023 facelift of the hybrid Hans, apply to the DM-i and DM-p and not to this car. The Han DM itself had no facelift, and no source we found records a change during its production that splits its parts. Match every part by the OE number on the one you are replacing.
BYD Han DM Parts: Frequently Asked Questions
How do I make sure a part fits my BYD Han DM?
Match the OE number. Every part on this site is listed under the OE number printed on the original part, and if the number on the part you are replacing matches the listing, the part fits. That check matters on the Han DM because it shares its name and much of its look with the later Han DM-i and Han DM-p, which use a different engine, drive system and battery. If the old part is missing or its number cannot be read, send a photo through the quote form and we will reply within 24 hours, usually sooner.
How can I tell a Han DM from a Han DM-i or Han DM-p?
Look under the bonnet. The Han DM has a 2.0-litre turbo engine with a six-speed dual-clutch gearbox behind it. The DM-p that replaced it in April 2022 uses a 1.5-litre turbo engine with BYD's EHS hybrid drive and no stepped gearbox. The later cars also changed the grille pattern, the detailing on the front wings and the design of the full-width rear light, but the engine bay is the surest check. Once you know which car you have, confirm each part by its OE number.
Does the Han DM have a Blade battery?
No. The Han DM uses a 15.2 kWh ternary lithium battery, which gave about 81 km of electric range on the NEDC test. The Blade battery, a lithium iron phosphate design, went into the Han EV launched at the same time and later into the Han DM-p. The two batteries use different cells, modules and management hardware, so battery and battery-cooling parts must be ordered for this car's own pack. Match them by the OE number on the part you are replacing.
What engine is in the Han DM, and does any other BYD use it?
It uses the BYD487ZQB, a 1,999 cc turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine rated at 141 kW and 320 Nm. No later Han carries it. The same engine, belt starter-generator and six-speed wet dual-clutch gearbox appear in the 2021 2.0T Tang DM SUV, though the earlier 2018 Tang DM used a different engine, the BYD487ZQA, so an engine part not listed for the Han may be listed for the 2021 Tang. Mounts, brackets and pipework can differ between a saloon and an SUV, so confirm each part by OE number before ordering.
What gearbox does the Han DM use, and does it need servicing?
It uses a six-speed wet dual-clutch gearbox, the only stepped gearbox in the Han range. The later DM-p uses BYD's EHS hybrid drive and the Han EV a single-speed reducer, so no other Han shares its gearbox parts. A wet dual-clutch gearbox runs its clutches in oil, which makes the gearbox oil and its filter regular service items. Check the service book for the change interval, then order the oil, filter and any seals by OE number.
What is the BSG motor, and why does the car have a drive belt?
The BSG is a 25 kW belt-driven starter-generator on the front of the engine. It starts the engine and generates power, and it is separate from the 180 kW motor that drives the rear wheels. Because it runs off a belt, the car has an accessory drive belt and tensioner that must suit this engine. If you hear squealing at start-up or a starting fault appears, check the belt and tensioner before suspecting the unit itself, and order both by OE number.
It is a plug-in hybrid. Does the Han DM still need oil and filters?
Yes. The 2.0-litre engine runs whenever the battery is low or more power is needed, and it drives the front wheels through the gearbox. It needs engine oil, an oil filter, an air filter and spark plugs like any turbo petrol engine, along with its lambda and emission sensors. The fuel tank holds 50 litres. Plan servicing around the engine's own schedule rather than treating the car as electric, and order filters by the OE number on the old part.
How many drive shafts does the Han DM have, and is there a propshaft?
It has four drive shafts and no propshaft. The engine and gearbox drive the front wheels, and a separate 180 kW electric motor drives the rear wheels, with nothing mechanical joining the two axles. That gives a front pair and a rear pair of drive shafts, each with its own CV joints, and no transfer case or centre differential to service. Order drive shafts and CV boots by axle and by side, and match each one by OE number.
What brakes does the Han DM have?
The front discs are ventilated and the rear discs are solid, with an electric parking brake. Discs and pads are therefore different front and rear, and a ventilated rear disc is meant for a different car. If you are unsure which disc you are looking at, a ventilated disc has vanes between its two faces and a solid disc does not. Order discs and pads by axle, and confirm each against the OE number on the old part.
What tyre size does the Han DM use, and does it carry a spare?
The Han DM uses 245/45 R19 tyres front and rear on both trims. Read the size on the sidewall of the tyres already fitted to confirm it before ordering tyres or rims. There is no spare wheel, and the car relies on a tyre repair kit. If the kit has been used, replace its sealant before the next journey, and order any rim by its OE number.
Will body parts from a Han EV fit my Han DM?
Some will and some will not. The Han DM and the Han EV of 2020 to 2022 share the 2,920 mm wheelbase, the 1,910 mm width and much of the same body, so doors, glass and many interior parts are good candidates. The front end is the least safe area, because the hybrid has to cool an engine and turbo as well as its electric parts. Treat a Han EV part as a lead rather than a match, and confirm it by OE number.
Did the Han DM have a facelift or a model-year change?
No. The Han DM ran from its launch in July 2020 until the Han DM-i and Han DM-p took its place on 10 April 2022, with no facelift in between. It was sold in two trim levels, both four-wheel drive. Later Han updates, including the 2023 facelift of the hybrid Hans, belong to the DM-i and DM-p. We know of no build-date split on the Han DM itself, so the OE number on the old part is the check for every order.
