About Oil Circuit (Pump & Pan)

Engine oil does four jobs at once: it separates moving surfaces with a pressurised film, carries heat away from the pistons and bearings, holds combustion soot in suspension, and protects against corrosion. The circuit that delivers it is simple in outline. A pump, driven by chain or directly from the crankshaft, draws oil through a pickup in the sump, forces it through the filter, and sends it along drilled galleries to the main and big end bearings, the camshafts and the timing drive. Oil cooling jets spray the underside of each piston crown, which is what keeps piston temperatures survivable under load. Everything returns to the sump under gravity, where a baffle stops the oil surging away from the pickup under braking and cornering. Pressure is a consequence of restriction, so low pressure at temperature usually means clearances have opened up rather than that the pump has stopped working.

What to know before buying Oil Circuit (Pump & Pan) parts

Diagnose before you order. A low pressure warning has several possible causes, and only one of them is the pump. A stretched pump chain, a blocked filter, a cracked pickup or a leaking cooling jet will all drop pressure. Each is a different part at a different price.

The listings cover the whole circuit. You will find oil pumps, oil pump chains and sprockets, oil sumps and oil collector gaskets. Oil filter housings sit alongside oil filters supplied loose and packaged. There are also oil filter connecting threaded tubes, engine oil dipsticks and dipstick tubes, and engine oil cooling jets.

Match the OE number, since pump capacity and sump shape follow the engine variant and the vehicle. Order the collector gasket and a fresh sump plug washer with any sump work. Neither seals properly a second time, and both are cheap enough to have on the bench before you start.

Where a number is displayed the part is purchasable. Anything without a price is quoted against the same factory number, and the quote also returns the delivered figure for a bulky sump. Our BYD group listings are the fullest, and more brands are being added.

Before You Order: 6 Checks

  1. Confirm actual pressure with a mechanical gauge before ordering a pump, since the sender may be at fault.
  2. Match the OE number, because pump capacity and sump shape follow the engine variant and the vehicle.
  3. Order the collector gasket and a sump plug washer with any sump removal.
  4. Use a filter of the correct specification, including its bypass and anti-drain valve behaviour.
  5. Check the pickup strainer for sludge whenever the sump is off.
  6. Prime the pump and fill the filter where the design allows, before the first start after assembly.

What Changed and Why

Oil circuits have become more sophisticated as manufacturers chase efficiency. Variable displacement pumps that adjust delivery to demand are now common, reducing the parasitic loss of pumping more oil than the engine needs, and they are controlled electrically rather than by a simple relief valve. Oil specifications have thinned at the same time to reduce drag, which places more weight on using exactly the grade specified rather than something similar. On hybrid applications, frequent stop and start cycles mean the circuit has to establish pressure quickly and often, which raises the importance of the filter's anti drain valve.

Oil Circuit (Pump & Pan): Frequently Asked Questions

My oil pressure warning comes on at idle. Is the pump failing?

It is one candidate among several and rarely the first. Before ordering a pump, fit a mechanical gauge and read actual pressure, because the electrical sender fails far more often than the pump does and produces an identical warning. If pressure genuinely is low at idle and recovers with revs, the usual cause is opened up bearing clearances rather than the pump, which is a bottom end job. Check the oil grade too, since a thinner oil than specified lowers hot idle pressure.

How urgent is a low oil pressure warning?

Treat it as an immediate stop. Unlike most warnings, this one describes a condition that destroys bearings in seconds rather than miles, and continuing to drive on genuinely low pressure turns a repairable engine into a scrap one. Pull over safely, switch off, and check the level. If the level is correct and the warning returns on restarting, do not drive the vehicle. Have it recovered and diagnosed rather than risking the journey to a workshop.

What does an oil cooling jet do?

It sprays a stream of oil onto the underside of the piston crown, carrying away heat that would otherwise soften the piston and raise the risk of detonation. Jets are fed from the main gallery, often through a small valve that opens above a threshold pressure so they do not rob pressure at idle. A blocked jet produces localised piston overheating and noise under load, and a jet that has broken away can contact the piston skirt. They are listed here individually.

Does the oil filter specification matter?

More than most people expect. A filter contains a bypass valve that opens if the element clogs or the oil is too thick to pass, and an anti drain valve that keeps the galleries full when the engine stops so pressure is restored quickly on the next start. Both are calibrated to the engine. A filter with the wrong bypass setting can leave the engine running on unfiltered oil, and one without a working anti drain valve gives a rattle at every start.

Why does my engine rattle for a second on start-up?

Usually because pressure has not yet reached the top of the engine, and the most common reason is a filter whose anti drain valve has failed and allowed the galleries to empty overnight. A stretched oil pump chain produces a similar noise from the front of the engine. Either way, a rattle at every cold start is worth investigating rather than tolerating, since the first seconds after start are when most bearing wear occurs on a healthy engine.

When should I replace the oil pump chain?

Whenever the sump or timing cover is off far enough to see it, if it shows slack beyond specification, and always if the engine has run low on oil or suffered a bearing failure. The chain is driven from the crankshaft and stretches in the same way a timing chain does, and once it jumps a tooth the pump either slows or stops. Since reaching it means dropping the sump, replacing a marginal chain while access is open is far cheaper than a second visit.

What do oil circuit parts cost?

Filters, dipsticks, gaskets and sump plug washers sit right at the bottom of the range. Oil pump chains and sprockets, dipstick tubes and cooling jets are modest. Oil pumps, filter housings and sumps cost more, with sumps varying widely because some are pressed steel and others cast aluminium carrying structural loads. The live minimum and maximum are shown in the band at the top of this page, and each listing shows its own figure or a quote button.

Can I clean and reuse a sump?

Usually yes, provided the sealing face is undamaged and the sump has not been distorted by an impact or by previous overtightening. Clean it thoroughly, since sludge in the corners will find its way back into the pickup, and inspect the drain plug thread carefully because a stripped thread in an aluminium sump means replacement. Fit a new collector gasket rather than reusing the old one, and follow the specified tightening sequence to avoid warping the flange.

Why does my oil pressure read low only when hot?

Because oil thins as it warms, so any clearance that has opened up passes more oil at temperature and pressure falls. That points at bearing wear rather than at the pump, particularly if the reading is healthy when cold and low at hot idle. Confirm with a mechanical gauge, check that the correct grade is in the engine, and inspect the oil for metallic glitter. If the bearings are worn, a new pump will raise the reading slightly and solve nothing.

Should I prime a new pump before starting the engine?

Yes, wherever the design allows it. A dry pump can take a surprising time to draw oil and build pressure, and the engine is running on residual film in the meantime. Pack the pump with clean assembly oil during fitting, fill the filter before screwing it on where the orientation permits, and where the engine can be cranked without starting, do so until pressure registers. Those few minutes remove the worst moment in the life of a rebuilt engine.

Will an oil pump from a related engine fit?

Only where the number agrees. Pump capacity is matched to the engine's bearing clearances, cooling jet flow and camshaft requirements, and manufacturers change pump specification between variants that share a block. A pump that bolts on and delivers too little starves the top end, while one delivering too much wastes power and can over pressurise cold. Read the number from your own pump, match it, and use the quote form where the reference brings back nothing.

The part I need shows no price. Can I still order it?

Yes. Sumps are bulky and pumps are engine specific, and both sell steadily enough to be priced on the common applications but not on the rarer ones. Send the reference and the reply covers the part and its carriage. Before ordering a pump on the strength of a low pressure warning, have the pressure measured with a mechanical gauge. A blocked pickup, a tired relief valve or a failing sensor produce the same warning and none of them needs a pump. Add the sump gasket, the plug washer and a filter to whatever you order, since all three are disturbed.
