Symptom Finder: Known Weak Points
| What you see or hear | Check first |
|---|---|
| An automatic gearbox part does not match the car | Check which automatic is fitted. The 1.8 uses a CVT and the 2013 1.5 uses a six-speed dry dual-clutch gearbox, and their parts do not interchange. |
| Clutch slipping or a heavy clutch pedal on a manual car | The clutch kit and its hydraulics. Read the engine code first, since the clutch has to suit the engine fitted, then order by OE number. |
| Heavy steering or a whine when turning the wheel | The hydraulic power steering pump, hoses and fluid level. The G3 has hydraulic assistance, so look for leaks at the pump and hoses before ordering. |
| Brake judder or squeal | The discs and pads. The G3 has discs at both ends, so check which axle the noise comes from before ordering, and match pads by OE number. |
| Car will not recognise the key or start from the button | On keyless cars, check the key fob battery first, then the receiver and start button, and order each by the OE number on the old unit. |
| Knocking from the rear over bumps | The torsion beam bushes and rear dampers. Worn bushes are a common cause on a car of this age, so inspect them before ordering dampers. |
| New wiper blades do not clip on or sit badly | The 2012 model moved to frameless wipers. Check the build date on the identification plate and order blades to suit the arm fitted. |

About BYD G3 Parts
The BYD G3 is a four-door, five-seat saloon that went on sale in China in October 2009 and was built until 2014. It uses a stretched version of the BYD F3 platform, with a 4,600 mm body on a 2,610 mm wheelbase, and a petrol engine driving the front wheels. Four engines were fitted over the years: two early 1.5-litre units, a Mitsubishi 4G15S and BYD's 473QB, then BYD's 1,497 cc 473QE, and a 1,839 cc BYD483QA. The gearbox was a five-speed manual, a CVT on the 1.8 or, from 2013, a six-speed dual-clutch on the 473QE. For parts, the engine and gearbox are the main split. The brakes, suspension, steering and wheels were much the same on every version we could check. Every part on this page is listed by its OE number, and that number is the surest way to confirm a part fits.
What to know before buying BYD G3 parts
Start with the engine, because the badge does not tell you enough. A car badged 1.5 can have any one of three engines. The earliest cars used a Mitsubishi 4G15S or BYD's own 473QB. The 2012 model, on sale from October 2011, moved to BYD's 473QE, a 1,497 cc all-aluminium engine with variable valve lift. The 1.8 used the 1,839 cc BYD483QA from start to finish. These are separate engines, so filters, gaskets, sensors and internal parts should be matched to the engine code stamped on the block, and then to the OE number on the old part.
The gearbox comes next. Most 1.5 cars have a five-speed manual, and every 1.8 has a CVT. From February 2013 the 473QE was also offered with a six-speed dry dual-clutch gearbox. That means an automatic G3 can be a 1.8 with a CVT or a late 1.5 with a dual-clutch, and the two share nothing inside the gearbox. Look at the engine as well as the gear selector before ordering a gearbox part, a clutch or gearbox oil. Engine and gearbox mounts follow the pairing, so match those by OE number too.
The G3 shares a lot with the F3 and L3 saloons. The 473QE and 483QA engines were fitted to all three, so engine parts often cross between them when the OE numbers match. The G3's body is longer than the F3's, though, so body panels, glass, trim and exhaust sections should be treated as G3 parts unless the OE number says otherwise. The G3R, a hatchback derived from the G3, has its own rear body.
The running gear varies far less. Every version we could check has disc brakes front and rear with ABS and brake force distribution, a hand-operated parking brake, MacPherson front suspension, a torsion beam rear axle, hydraulic power steering and 195/60 R15 tyres on 15 inch rims. Even so, order brake and suspension parts by the OE number on the old part rather than by the model name.
Equipment is the other thing that changes from car to car. The Intelligent Edition of April 2010 brought keyless entry, push-button starting and a CAN-BUS network, and the 2012 model changed the interior, the instrument cluster and the wipers. Read the build date on the identification plate before ordering dashboard trim, instrument parts, wiper blades or keyless electronics. For painted panels, order by the colour code on the car rather than by colour name.
Before You Order: 7 Checks
- Read the engine code on the block before ordering any engine part, since a 1.5 badge can cover the 4G15S, the 473QB or the 473QE.
- Check the gearbox type before ordering a clutch, gearbox part or gearbox oil, since an automatic G3 can have a CVT or a dual-clutch gearbox.
- Match the OE number on the part you are replacing to the OE number on the listing, which is the surest check that a part fits.
- Treat body panels, glass and trim as G3 parts unless the OE number shows they are shared with the F3, L3 or G3R.
- Read the build date on the identification plate before ordering interior trim, instrument parts, wiper blades or keyless electronics, since the 2012 model changed them.
- Read the tyre size on the sidewall before ordering tyres or rims, and expect 195/60 R15 on standard wheels.
- Order painted panels by the colour code on the car rather than by colour name.
Generations and Facelifts
The G3 was BYD's step above the F3, a best-selling saloon of the time. It was built on a stretched F3 platform and launched in October 2009 as a longer, better-equipped car, with a 4,600 mm body on a 2,610 mm wheelbase. At first it came with a 1.5-litre engine and five-speed manual gearbox or with the 1,839 cc BYD483QA and a CVT. The early 1.5 engines were the Mitsubishi 4G15S and BYD's 473QB.
The Intelligent Edition launched on 16 April 2010 in 1.5 and 1.8 form. It added a keyless entry system, push-button starting, approach lighting and a CAN-BUS network that reports faults through the instrument panel. Those are electrical parts, so the receiver, start button and network hardware only apply to cars that have them.
In 2011 BYD added the G3R, a hatchback derived from the G3. On 31 October 2011 the 2012 model went on sale alongside updated F3 and L3 models. It brought the 1,497 cc 473QE with variable valve lift in place of the earlier 1.5, a new interior and instrument cluster, frameless wipers, more galvanised steel in the body and extra sound insulation. The body dimensions stayed the same.
From February 2013 the 473QE was also offered with a six-speed dry dual-clutch gearbox, the only automatic 1.5 in the range. Production of that version ended in March 2014, and the G3 was not updated again. The body was never reshaped, so a car cannot be dated by its shape. Before ordering engine parts, gearbox parts, interior trim or instrument parts, read the engine code and the build date on the identification plate.
BYD G3 Parts: Frequently Asked Questions
How do I make sure a part fits my BYD G3?
Match the OE number. Every part on this site is listed under the OE number printed on the original part, and if the number on the part you are replacing matches the listing, the part fits. That check matters on the G3 because it shares engines with the F3 and L3 but has its own body, and because a 1.5 badge can cover three different engines. If the old part is missing or its number cannot be read, send it through the quote form with a photo and we will reply within 24 hours, usually sooner.
Which engine does my G3 have?
Read the engine code on the block. A car badged 1.5 has a Mitsubishi 4G15S, a BYD 473QB or a BYD 473QE. The first two were fitted to early cars, and the 473QE, a 1,497 cc engine with variable valve lift, arrived with the 2012 model in October 2011. A 1.8 has the 1,839 cc BYD483QA. The build date on the identification plate narrows it down, but the code on the block settles it. Order engine parts to that code and confirm each one by OE number.
Is every automatic G3 a 1.8?
No. The 1.8 always has a CVT, but from February 2013 the 1.5 473QE was also sold with a six-speed dry dual-clutch gearbox. So an automatic G3 may have either engine and either gearbox, and the two automatics share no internal parts, clutches or oil. Check the engine code and the build date before ordering anything for the gearbox. Once you know which unit is fitted, match each part by the OE number on the old one.
Do the 473QB and 473QE share parts?
Do not assume they do. Both are 1.5-litre BYD engines, but the 473QE is a later all-aluminium design with variable valve lift, and it replaced the earlier engine with the 2012 model. Filters, gaskets, sensors and internal parts should be ordered for the exact engine fitted. Read the code on the block, check the build date on the identification plate if the code is hard to see, and match every part by its OE number.
Can I use F3 or L3 parts on a G3?
Sometimes. The G3 is built on a stretched F3 platform, and the 473QE and 483QA engines were fitted to the F3, G3 and L3, so many engine parts carry the same OE number across all three. The G3's body is longer than the F3's, though, so body panels, glass, interior trim and exhaust sections usually differ. Use the OE number to decide rather than the model name. If the numbers match, the part fits.
Is the G3R the same car as the G3?
The G3R is a hatchback derived from the G3 and launched in 2011. Mechanically it has a lot in common with the saloon, but the rear of the car is a different shape. Tailgate, rear glass, rear lights, rear bumper and boot trim should not be ordered from G3 saloon listings. Engine, brake and suspension parts may be shared, so check those by OE number before ordering.
What changed with the 2012 model?
The 2012 G3 went on sale on 31 October 2011, alongside updated F3 and L3 models. It replaced the earlier 1.5 with the 1,497 cc 473QE and brought a new interior, a new instrument cluster, frameless wipers, more galvanised steel in the body and extra sound insulation. The body dimensions did not change. Before ordering dashboard trim, instrument parts, wiper blades or 1.5 engine parts, read the build date on the identification plate and match the part by OE number.
What is the Intelligent Edition, and does it change any parts?
The Intelligent Edition was launched on 16 April 2010 in 1.5 and 1.8 form. It is an equipment level rather than a facelift, and the body stayed the same. It added keyless entry, push-button starting, approach lighting and a CAN-BUS network that shows faults on the instrument panel. Those features need their own receiver, start button and wiring. Check whether your car has push-button starting before ordering keys, locks or ignition parts, then match them by OE number.
Are the rear brakes discs or drums?
Every G3 we could check, from the 2010 1.8 CVT to the 2013 1.5 dual-clutch, has disc brakes front and rear, with ABS, brake force distribution and a hand-operated parking brake. We found no drum rear axle for the G3. Look at the rear wheels before ordering pads or discs, since that takes a moment, and match the pads, discs and parking brake parts by OE number.
Does the G3 have electric or hydraulic power steering?
Hydraulic. The G3 uses mechanical hydraulic power steering, with a pump driven by the engine, on every version we could check. It has no electric steering column, so electric steering parts listed for other BYD models do not apply. If the steering feels heavy or whines, check the fluid level, the pump and the hoses first. Then order the pump, rack or hoses by the OE number on the old part.
What tyre and wheel size does the G3 use?
The standard size is 195/60 R15, the same front and rear, on a 5.5J x 15 rim with an offset of 45 mm. That size appears on every G3 we checked, whatever the engine. Wheels may have been changed by a previous owner, so read the size on the sidewall of the tyres fitted before you order, and match rims to the rim size already on the car.
Which gearbox oil does my G3 need?
That depends on the gearbox. The five-speed manual, the CVT on the 1.8 and the dual-clutch on the 2013 1.5 are three different units, and an oil made for one should not go into another. Using the wrong type can damage the gearbox. Confirm which gearbox is fitted from the engine, the gear selector and the build date, then order the oil or fluid listed for that gearbox by OE number.
Safety Recalls Affecting This Model
If you have been told your G3 has an open steering recall, check the badge against the engine before acting on it. Read character eight of the windscreen code: F marks a 1.5 with a five-speed manual, G marks the 1.8 with a CVT, and character seven gives the airbag level. A car showing a G3 badge with a recall attached is more likely misidentified than genuinely affected, given how heavily this platform shares parts and part numbers with the F3, F3R and L3.
