Symptom Finder: Known Weak Points
| What you see or hear | Check first |
|---|---|
| Tailgate will not stay open or drops slowly | The tailgate gas struts. These are F3R parts with no saloon equivalent, so order them by the OE number on the old strut and replace both sides together. |
| Grinding, squeal or poor braking at the rear | Look at the rear axle first to see whether discs or drums are fitted, then order pads and discs or shoes and cylinders to suit. |
| Heavy steering or a whine when turning | Check the power steering fluid level and look for leaks at the hoses. Then order the pump or rack to suit the assistance system fitted, by OE number. |
| Engine warning light or rough idle | Start with the lambda sensor, spark plugs and ignition parts. Read the engine code on the block first, since the 1.5 badge covers more than one engine. |
| Automatic slow to shift or slipping | Check the gearbox fluid level and condition first. The automatic is fitted only to the 1.6, so match any gearbox part to that car by OE number. |
| Knock from the front over bumps | Anti-roll bar links, lower arm bushes and the strut top mounts on the MacPherson front suspension. Order each part by the OE number on the old one. |
| Rear wiper not working | Check the blade and arm, then the motor and the wiring where it passes into the tailgate. The saloon has no rear wiper, so order F3R parts. |

About BYD F3R Parts
The BYD F3R is the five-door hatchback version of the BYD F3 saloon, launched on 30 July 2007. It keeps the saloon's 2,600 mm wheelbase and front-wheel drive but ends in a tailgate, so the body is 4,325 mm long against the saloon's 4,533 mm. Power comes from a petrol engine. A 1.5 litre was fitted at launch and a 1.6 litre was added in 2008. Most cars have a five-speed manual, and the four-speed automatic was offered only with the 1.6. That means the usual service and wear parts of an older petrol hatchback: oil and filters, clutch and gearbox parts, brakes, steering and suspension. Much of the front of the car is shared with the saloon of the same years. The tailgate, rear glass, rear lamps and rear bumper belong to the F3R alone. Every part on this page is listed by its OE number, and the number on the old part is the surest check that a replacement fits.
What to know before buying BYD F3R parts
Start by making sure the car is an F3R and not the F3 saloon. The two share a 2,600 mm wheelbase and look alike from the front, but the hatchback is 4,325 mm long and the saloon 4,533 mm, and the difference sits behind the rear doors. The F3R has a tailgate and a rear wiper, where the saloon has a boot lid and no rear wiper. The tailgate, its gas struts, the rear glass, the rear lamps, the rear bumper and the rear wiper parts are F3R parts, so do not order them from saloon listings.
The front of the car is where saloon parts are most likely to fit, but only from the right years. The F3 saloon was facelifted in March 2014 with a new grille, headlamps and bumpers, and the F3R never received that update. Front-end body and lighting parts from a 2014 or later F3 will not suit an F3R, so match them by OE number.
The engine is the next thing to check. Launch cars used the 1.5 litre 4G15S, rated at 78 kW. BYD's own 473QB was also used for the 1.5, and 2011 models are listed with the BYD 473QE at 80 kW. The 1.6 litre is a 4G18 at 73.5 kW, and it is the only engine that was offered with the four-speed automatic. The 1.5 badge covers more than one engine, so read the engine code stamped on the block and order filters, gaskets, sensors and ignition parts by the OE number on the old part.
Equipment varied from car to car. The launch cars had ABS with EBD and 14-inch disc brakes, but some F3Rs were built with drums at the rear, so look at the rear axle before ordering pads, discs or shoes. The 1.6 automatic added an electric sunroof and LED indicators in the door mirrors that simpler versions lack. Power steering was standard, but check the assistance system on the car itself before ordering a pump or rack.
Finally, order painted panels by the colour code on the car. Before ordering engine parts for a 1.5, read the build date on the identification plate, since the engine fitted changed during the car's life.
Before You Order: 7 Checks
- If you are unsure whether the car is an F3R or an F3 saloon, measure it: the F3R is 4,325 mm long and the saloon 4,533 mm. A tailgate and a rear wiper confirm the hatchback.
- Before you order, match the OE number on the part you are replacing to the OE number on the listing.
- Read the engine code on the block before ordering engine parts, since the 1.5 badge covers more than one engine.
- Look at the rear axle before ordering rear pads, discs or shoes, since both discs and drums were fitted.
- Treat any automatic gearbox part as a 1.6 part, and confirm the car has the 1.6 before ordering one.
- Check front-end panels and lamps against the OE number, since parts from the 2014 and later F3 saloon do not fit.
- Order painted panels by the colour code on the car rather than by colour name.
Generations and Facelifts
The F3R grew out of the BYD F3 saloon, which went on sale on 22 September 2005 on a 2,600 mm wheelbase. The hatchback followed on 30 July 2007. It was launched across China in four trims with the 1.5 litre 4G15S and a five-speed manual gearbox. It kept the saloon's wheelbase and running gear but had its own shorter tail behind the rear doors, with a tailgate and a rear wiper.
In June 2008 BYD added a 1.6 litre automatic, pairing the 4G18 engine with a four-speed automatic gearbox. The 1.5 was never offered with the automatic, so automatic gearbox parts, mounts and the related wiring belong to 1.6 cars only. The 1.6 automatic also brought an electric sunroof and LED indicators in the door mirrors.
By the 2011 model year the 1.5 was listed with BYD's own 473QE engine, rated at 80 kW. The body did not change with it. The F3R kept the same 4,325 mm length, 1,705 mm width and 1,490 mm height throughout, and we have found no facelift of the hatchback. Sales wound down in the early 2010s.
The saloon carried on without it. The F3 was facelifted in March 2014 with a new grille, lights and bumpers, and again in October 2016, and those later front-end parts do not match the F3R. On the F3R itself, body panels do not vary by year, but engine parts for a 1.5 do. Read the build date on the identification plate and the code on the engine before ordering.
BYD F3R Parts: Frequently Asked Questions
How do I make sure a part fits my BYD F3R?
Match the OE number. Every part on this site is listed under the OE number printed on the original part, and if the number on the part you are replacing matches the listing, the part fits. That matters on the F3R because it shares much of its front half with the F3 saloon but has its own rear end, and because the engine and brakes vary from car to car. If the old part is missing or its number cannot be read, send a photo through the quote form and we will reply within 24 hours, usually sooner.
How can I tell an F3R from an F3 saloon?
Look at the back. The F3R is a five-door hatchback with a tailgate and a rear wiper, while the F3 saloon has a separate boot lid. If you want a figure, the F3R is 4,325 mm long and the saloon of the same years 4,533 mm, on the same 2,600 mm wheelbase. The difference matters for every part behind the rear doors, from the rear bumper to the lamps and glass. Once you know which car you have, confirm each part by its OE number.
Can I fit F3 saloon parts to my F3R?
Some, but check each one. The two cars share their 2,600 mm wheelbase and front-wheel-drive running gear, so many mechanical parts are common to both. The body is where they differ. The tailgate, its gas struts, the rear glass, rear lamps, rear bumper and rear wiper are F3R parts with no saloon equivalent. Front-end parts from an F3 built after the March 2014 facelift will not fit either. Compare the OE number on your old part with the listing before ordering anything from saloon stock.
Which engine is in my F3R?
It depends on the badge and the year. Launch cars used the 1.5 litre 4G15S at 78 kW, BYD's own 473QB was also used for the 1.5, and 2011 models list the BYD 473QE at 80 kW. The 1.6 is a 4G18 at 73.5 kW. Because the 1.5 badge covers several engines, it will not tell you which one is fitted. Read the engine code stamped on the block, then order filters, gaskets, sensors and ignition parts by the OE number on the old part.
Was there a 1.5 automatic F3R?
No. The automatic arrived in June 2008 and was paired only with the 1.6 litre 4G18 engine, driving through a four-speed automatic gearbox. Every 1.5 F3R has a five-speed manual. If you are ordering automatic gearbox parts, mounts or related wiring, the car should be a 1.6, and a listing that offers a 1.5 automatic describes a car that was never built. Confirm the engine on the car, then match the gearbox part by the OE number on the old unit.
Are the rear brakes discs or drums?
Both were fitted. The launch cars were described with 14-inch disc brakes, while other F3Rs were built with drum brakes at the rear. The model name and year will not tell you which your car has, and pads and discs do not interchange with shoes and drums. Look at the rear axle through the wheel spokes, or take a wheel off, before ordering anything for the rear brakes. Then match pads, discs, shoes or wheel cylinders by the OE number on the old parts.
Does the F3R have a rear wiper?
Yes. At launch in 2007, the rear wiper was one of the features that set the hatchback apart from the saloon. The F3 saloon has no rear wiper, so the motor, arm and blade cannot come from saloon stock. If the rear wiper stops working, check the blade and the arm first. Then check the motor and the wiring where it passes into the tailgate, since those cables flex each time the tailgate opens. Order the replacement by the OE number on the old part.
Will front bumpers and lamps from a newer F3 fit my F3R?
Not from a facelifted car. The F3 saloon was facelifted in March 2014 with a new grille, headlamps and bumpers, and again in October 2016. The F3R received neither update and keeps the earlier front design throughout. Front-end body and lighting parts from a 2014 or later F3 therefore will not suit it. Parts from an earlier saloon may match, but check the OE number on the old part against the listing before you order.
What power steering does the F3R have?
Power steering was standard. Sources for the F3 family describe electro-hydraulic assistance, but more than one system has been described for the F3R, so the badge and the year are not a safe guide. Before ordering a pump, rack, column or hose, look at what is fitted. Check for a pump and its fluid reservoir, and note the connectors on the column. Then match the replacement by the OE number on the old part, since parts for different systems do not interchange.
Does every F3R have ABS?
Not necessarily. The launch cars were sold with ABS and EBD, and so was the 1.6 automatic, but equipment varied between trims over the car's life, so check the car rather than assuming. Look for the ABS unit in the engine bay and for sensors at the wheel hubs. If ABS is fitted, order wheel speed sensors and the ABS unit by the OE number on the old part, since a car without ABS has no use for them.
What service parts does the F3R need most often?
The usual items for a petrol hatchback of its age: engine oil and an oil filter, the air filter, spark plugs and brake fluid, along with pads or shoes as they wear. Check the timing drive and auxiliary belts at the intervals given in the owner's manual. Order every service part by engine code, since the 1.5 badge covers several engines and their filters and plugs are not all the same. Then confirm each part by OE number before you order.
Do F3R panels change by year?
No. The F3R kept the same body from its 2007 launch to the end of production, at 4,325 mm long, 1,705 mm wide and 1,490 mm tall on a 2,600 mm wheelbase, and it had no facelift. Panels, glass and rear lamps therefore do not vary by year. The changes are under the bonnet and on the equipment list. For engine parts, read the build date on the identification plate and the engine code. For painted panels, order by the colour code on the car.
Safety Recalls Affecting This Model
Outside that build window and that fault, no other recall is recorded against the F3R. If you have been told otherwise, check the build date on your plate against the range above and treat any wider claim about this model with caution, since the F3 saloon and the other cars built on this platform were not named in this campaign.
