BYD G3R Parts

The BYD G3R is a five-door petrol hatchback built from 2011, with a 1.5-litre or 1.8-litre engine and a manual or CVT gearbox. It wears G3 saloon bodywork over F3R underpinnings, so treat the two donor cars differently when you order. Take underbody, exhaust and suspension parts from the F3R, and confirm engine parts against the number stamped on the block rather than the 1.5-litre badge alone.

Symptom Finder: Known Weak Points

What you see or hearCheck first
Engine using oil or smoking on start-up Valve stem seals and the valvetrain first, then the gaskets. Read the engine code on the block and order seals and gaskets for that engine.
Oil leaking from the bottom of the engine The sump gasket and the crankshaft seals. Clean the area, find where the leak starts, then order the seal or gasket by OE number.
Rough idle or hesitation when accelerating Spark plugs, the throttle body and the intake manifold gasket. The 1.5 and 1.8 use different parts, so check the engine code before ordering.
Rattle from the front of the engine on a cold start The timing drive and its tensioner. Order timing parts by the engine code stamped on the block, not by the badge.
CVT slipping, juddering or slow to pull away Check the level and condition of the fluid first. A CVT needs its own fluid, so order the fluid and filter for this gearbox by OE number.
Brake judder or the car pulling under braking Discs, pads and calipers at the front, then the rear brakes. Check whether the rear axle has drums or discs, and order to suit.
Rust or bubbling paint along the lower sills Look closely at the sills and side skirt trim for corrosion before ordering body parts, and order painted parts by the colour code on the car.

About BYD G3R Parts

The BYD G3R is the five-door hatchback version of the G3 compact saloon. It went on sale in China on 8 April 2011. It is a conventional petrol car sold in two versions. The first has a 1.5-litre BYD473QD engine with 80 kW and a five-speed manual gearbox. The second has a 1.8-litre BYD483QA engine with 90 kW and a CVT. The body is 4,380 mm long on a 2,600 mm wheelbase, which makes it shorter than the G3 saloon. It has its own front end, a tailgate and LED rear lamps. For parts, the G3R is a simple petrol car to keep running: filters, plugs, gaskets, timing and valvetrain parts, and the usual brake and suspension wear items. The harder part is telling it apart from the G3 and the F3R. It shares a lot of its design with both, but not all of its parts. Every part here is listed by OE number, and the number on the old part is the surest way to check fitment.

What to know before buying BYD G3R parts

Start by making sure the car is a G3R and not a G3 saloon or an F3R hatchback. The G3 saloon is 4,600 mm long on a 2,610 mm wheelbase. The G3R is 4,380 mm long on a 2,600 mm wheelbase, the same wheelbase as the F3 and F3R. Width and height match the saloon at 1,705 mm and 1,490 mm, so the tail is the quickest check. The G3R has a tailgate and the G3 has a boot lid.

The body is where most wrong orders happen. At launch the G3R was given its own front styling, with a U-shaped front end and a chrome grille, and it has LED rear lamps. So do not assume bumpers, grilles, lamps, the tailgate or the rear glass will fit from the saloon. Order body parts and lamps by the OE number on the old part. Order painted panels by the colour code on the car rather than by the colour name.

The two drivetrains are easy to tell apart, because the gearbox follows the engine. A manual car has the 1.5-litre engine, which launched as the BYD473QD with 80 kW and 144 Nm. A CVT car has the 1.8-litre BYD483QA with 90 kW and 160 Nm. BYD built its 1.5-litre 473Q engines in more than one version across the F3 and G3 ranges. A 1.5 part listed for a sister model may therefore suit a different version. Read the engine code on the block, and match filters, plugs, gaskets, seals and timing parts to that code and to the OE number on the old part.

Wheels are simple. Both versions left the factory on 195/60 R15 tyres and 6J x 15 rims with an offset of 43 mm. Check the sidewall anyway, because many cars of this age have had different wheels or tyres fitted since. Check the rear brakes on the car before ordering. Whether the axle has a drum or a disc decides which shoes, pads, discs or cylinders you need.

The G3R was sold only as a 2011 model and never had a facelift. Build dates do not split its parts the way they do on newer models. The engine code and the OE number tell you what fits.

Before You Order: 7 Checks

  1. Make sure you have the right body before ordering panels or glass. The G3R is a 4,380 mm hatchback and the G3 is a 4,600 mm saloon, so order body parts for the G3R only.
  2. Compare the OE number on the part you are replacing with the OE number on the listing, and order only if they match.
  3. Read the engine code on the block, then order filters, plugs, gaskets, seals or timing parts to match that code.
  4. Check whether the car is a manual or a CVT, then order gearbox fluid and parts for that gearbox only.
  5. Look at the rear brakes on the car, then order pads, shoes, discs or cylinders to suit what is fitted.
  6. The factory tyre size is 195/60 R15, but read the size on the sidewall before ordering tyres or rims.
  7. Order painted panels by the colour code on the car rather than by colour name.

Generations and Facelifts

The G3R's story starts with the F3, BYD's compact saloon from 2005, and its hatchback the F3R, which arrived in 2007 on the same 2,600 mm wheelbase. Early F3 and F3R cars used the Mitsubishi-designed 4G15S. BYD's own 473Q engines began replacing it in 2009, so engine parts for an F3R depend on the engine code.

The G3 saloon followed in October 2009. It was larger than the F3, at 4,600 mm long on a 2,610 mm wheelbase. The G3R, its hatchback, went on sale on 8 April 2011 in two versions, a 1.5-litre manual and a 1.8-litre CVT. BYD sold it alongside the F3R as a second compact hatchback. It took the G3 name but used the F3's shorter wheelbase. It had its own front end and LED rear lamps, and its body was 220 mm shorter than the saloon.

The G3R was only ever listed as a 2011 model, and it had no facelift. Production of the G3 range ended in 2014. For parts, that means one body and two drivetrains. Dates do not split body panels, glass or wheels on this car. The engine code on the block decides which engine parts fit, and the OE number on the old part confirms everything else.

BYD G3R Parts: Frequently Asked Questions

How do I make sure a part fits my BYD G3R?

Match the OE number. Every part on this site is listed under the OE number printed on the original part. If the number on the part you are replacing matches the listing, the part fits. This matters on the G3R because it shares its name with the G3 saloon and its wheelbase with the F3R, but it differs from both in places. If the old part is missing or you cannot read its number, send the details and a photo through the quote form. We will reply within 24 hours, usually sooner.

How can I tell a G3R from a G3 saloon?

Look at the back. The G3R is a five-door hatchback with a tailgate, while the G3 is a four-door saloon with a boot lid. The hatchback is also shorter, at 4,380 mm long on a 2,600 mm wheelbase. The saloon is 4,600 mm long on a 2,610 mm wheelbase. Both are 1,705 mm wide and 1,490 mm tall, so the two cars can look very alike from the front. Once you know which body you have, check each part by its OE number.

Do G3 saloon parts fit the G3R?

Some may, but do not assume any of them will. The G3R has a shorter body, a wheelbase 10 mm shorter, its own front styling with a chrome grille, LED rear lamps and a tailgate. Body panels, lamps, rear glass and trim are unlikely to fit from the saloon. Engines and running gear have more in common across BYD's compact cars of the time, but being in the same model family does not prove a part is shared. Compare the OE number on the old part with the listing before ordering.

Is the G3R related to the F3R?

Closely. The F3R is the hatchback version of BYD's F3, launched in 2007, and it has the same 2,600 mm wheelbase as the G3R. BYD sold the two side by side as a pair of compact hatchbacks. Their engines are the biggest difference. Early F3R cars used the Mitsubishi-designed 4G15S, while launch reports for the G3R list only BYD's own engines. Order engine parts by the code on the block, and everything else by the OE number on the old part.

My G3R is a 1.5. Which engine does it have?

Launch reports name the BYD473QD. It is a 1.5-litre engine with an aluminium head and block and multi-point injection, rated at 80 kW (109 PS, about 107 hp) and 144 Nm. It is always paired with a five-speed manual gearbox. BYD built its 473Q engines in more than one version across the F3 and G3 ranges, and they do not always share parts. Read the engine code stamped on the block before ordering filters, plugs, gaskets, seals or timing parts. Then check the OE number on the old part against the listing.

Which engine does an automatic G3R have?

The automatic G3R has the 1.8-litre BYD483QA engine, rated at 90 kW and 160 Nm, driving through a CVT. On this car the gearbox always goes with the engine. Every 1.5 is a manual and every 1.8 is a CVT, so the gear lever tells you which engine the car has. A CVT uses a belt and pulleys rather than fixed gears and needs its own fluid, so do not fill it with ordinary automatic transmission fluid. Order CVT fluid and filters by OE number.

What tyres and wheels does the G3R use?

Both versions left the factory on 195/60 R15 tyres and 6J x 15 alloy wheels with an offset of 43 mm. The wheels are held on with nuts rather than bolts. The car was only sold for a short time, and many will have had new wheels or tyres fitted since. Read the size on the tyre sidewall before ordering. If you are replacing a wheel, check the size stamped on the rim as well. Order wheel nuts to match the wheel actually fitted.

Does the G3R have disc or drum brakes at the rear?

Check the car rather than a specification sheet. Sources for the G3R do not agree about the rear brakes, and a car of this age may have had its brake parts changed. Look through the rear wheel. A disc and caliper means you need pads and discs. A closed drum means you need shoes, drums and wheel cylinders. Then order those parts, and any hoses or lines, by the OE number on the old part so they match what is on the car.

Did the G3R have a facelift?

No. The G3R went on sale on 8 April 2011 and was only ever listed as a 2011 model, in two versions: the 1.5-litre manual and the 1.8-litre CVT. The G3 range went out of production in 2014, and no updated version of the hatchback was introduced before then. That keeps ordering simple, because body panels, glass and wheels do not change with the build date on this car. The engine and gearbox are what differ from one G3R to another, so check those first and then order by OE number.

Are the lamps and bumpers the same as on the G3 saloon?

Assume they are different. At launch the G3R got its own front styling, with a U-shaped front end and a chrome grille. Its rear lamps are LED units designed to fit around the hatchback tailgate. A lamp or bumper from a G3 saloon may look similar but is unlikely to fit or match. Read the OE number on the back of the old lamp or on the bumper, and order by that number. For painted bumpers, use the colour code on the car.

Which parts should I plan for when servicing a G3R?

It is a conventional petrol car, so the usual service parts apply: engine oil, an oil filter, an air filter and spark plugs, plus CVT fluid on the 1.8. As the car gets older, add brake pads, discs, brake fluid and suspension wear parts. The two engines take different filters, plugs and gaskets, so read the engine code on the block first. Then order each part by its OE number, and order the full set together so the job can be done in one visit.

The engine is using oil. Which parts should I check?

On a petrol engine of this age, oil use usually points to worn valve stem seals or piston rings. A leak on the outside of the engine usually comes from a gasket or a crankshaft seal. Smoke on start-up suggests the valve stem seals. Trace any wet patches back to where they start before ordering. Seals and gaskets are specific to each engine, and the 1.5 and 1.8 are different engines. Read the engine code on the block and match each part by the OE number on the old part.
