About Throttle Body & Manifold

The throttle controls how much air reaches the engine, and the manifold distributes that air evenly to each cylinder. On an electronic throttle body a motor moves the butterfly, two position sensors report where it actually sits, and the control unit decides the opening from pedal position, engine load, cruise demand and stability control input, which is why the same hardware can close the throttle without the driver lifting. Older designs use a cable from the pedal and a separate idle control valve. Manifolds are designed around runner length and volume, because the pressure waves travelling up and down each runner help fill the cylinder at particular engine speeds, and some use variable geometry flaps to change effective length across the range. Between the two sits a gasket that must seal completely, since any leak here is unmetered air.

What to know before buying Throttle Body & Manifold parts

Try cleaning before you buy. A throttle body suffering from deposits around the butterfly is often cured by cleaning and an idle relearn. That costs nothing but time. Where the motor or the position sensors have failed, the body is the part.

Order by the OE number. Bore size, connector pinout and sensor calibration all follow the engine.

Listings cover throttle bodies in both forms. Electronic throttle bodies and electronic throttle body assemblies sit alongside plain throttle bodies. Throttle body gaskets, spacer blocks and intake manifold washers go with them. Intake manifolds and manifold assemblies, intake manifold brackets, accelerator cable assemblies and throttle cable brackets complete the range.

Add the gasket to any throttle body removal. Reusing a flattened one is the most common reason an idle is worse after the work than before it. A shown figure means the reference is live for purchase. Anything without a price is quoted against the same factory number. That is the usual route for manifolds and electronic throttle bodies ordered per engine variant. We cover the BYD group most fully, and more catalogues load over time.

Before You Order: 6 Checks

  1. Try cleaning and an idle relearn before ordering an electronic throttle body.
  2. Match the OE number, since bore size, connector pinout and sensor calibration follow the engine.
  3. Order a new throttle body gasket, because the original is flattened and will not reseal.
  4. Perform the idle relearn on a fully warmed engine, or the procedure will not take.
  5. Check for stored codes that would block a relearn, such as airflow or coolant temperature faults.
  6. Inspect the manifold gasket and washers whenever the manifold is removed.

What Changed and Why

Electronic throttle control has made the throttle body a shared resource rather than a driver input. The same motor now serves cruise control, traction and stability intervention, hill hold, and the torque management that smooths gear changes on automatic transmissions, which is why a throttle fault disables far more than acceleration. Manifolds have moved to composite mouldings for weight and thermal reasons, and variable geometry flaps inside them are a common source of faults, since their actuator linkages wear and their position sensors drift while the manifold itself remains sound.

Throttle Body & Manifold: Frequently Asked Questions

My idle hunts up and down. Throttle body?

Very likely, and cleaning it is the first move rather than replacing it. Carbon and oil mist from the crankcase ventilation system build up around the butterfly and in the bore, changing the airflow at the small openings the control unit uses at idle. Clean it with a proper throttle cleaner and a soft cloth, taking care not to scrub any coating off the bore or force the butterfly, then perform the idle relearn. A large proportion of hunting idle complaints end there.

What is an idle relearn and why does it matter?

It is the procedure that lets the control unit measure where the closed throttle position now sits and how much air passes at idle, so it can hold the target speed. After cleaning, replacing or disconnecting a throttle body, its old adaptation values no longer match reality, which shows as a high, low or unstable idle. Run the relearn on a fully warmed engine with no other faults stored, since a cold engine or an unrelated code will prevent the procedure completing.

Why did my idle get worse after cleaning the throttle body?

Usually one of three things. The adaptation was not relearned, so the unit is working from values that describe the dirty throttle. The gasket or O ring under the throttle body was reused and is now leaking, adding unmetered air. Or cleaner was sprayed into a sensor or onto a coated bore surface and damaged it. Fit a new gasket as a matter of course, keep cleaner away from sensors, and run the relearn on a warm engine before concluding anything is wrong.

What causes a reduced power warning?

On an electronic throttle system, most often a disagreement between the two position sensors in the throttle body or between the two tracks in the accelerator pedal. The control unit cannot tell which input is honest, so it limits torque rather than acting on a possibly false request. The code identifies whether the pedal or the throttle body is reporting the disagreement. Check the wiring and connectors before ordering, since a chafed loom produces the same fault at a fraction of the cost.

Can I clean or replace a throttle body myself?

Cleaning is straightforward on most engines: remove the intake duct, clean the bore and both faces of the butterfly with the correct product, and refit with a new gasket. Replacement is equally simple mechanically. What both need afterwards is the relearn, which on many vehicles requires a scan tool, and on others is a defined ignition and pedal sequence. Check which applies to your vehicle before starting, because an unadapted throttle can leave the car idling badly.

What do throttle and manifold parts cost?

Gaskets, spacer blocks and brackets barely register. Accelerator cables on the older applications are similarly cheap. Throttle bodies are the middle of this category, with electronic units costing more than cable operated ones because of the motor and position sensors inside. Intake manifolds, particularly plastic ones with variable geometry flaps, are the expensive end. The live range for the group is shown above. Before spending on a manifold, have the flap actuator checked separately, since on many designs it is a serviceable item and the manifold need not be replaced at all.

Are throttle bodies interchangeable between engines?

Rarely, and the differences are hidden. Bore diameter is matched to the engine's airflow, the connector pinout and the sensor output scaling must match what the control unit expects, and some units carry integrated idle passages or heating. A throttle body that bolts on and reports on a different scale gives a car that runs, badly, with no obvious cause. Match the OE number from your own unit, and use the quote form where the reference brings back nothing.

What are variable geometry flaps in a manifold?

They are flaps inside the runners that change the effective runner length or induce swirl, giving better cylinder filling at low engine speeds and better breathing at high ones. Their weakness is mechanical: linkages wear, actuator arms crack and position sensors drift, and because they sit in the airstream they collect deposits. The result is a fault code and a flat spot rather than a dramatic failure. Where the flaps are integral to the manifold, the manifold is the part.

Do I need to replace the manifold gasket every time?

Yes, whenever the manifold or the throttle body has been removed. These gaskets are compressed on first fitting and do not spring back, so a reused one leaves a path for unmetered air that shows as lean fuel trim, an unstable idle and sometimes a whistle. They are among the cheapest parts in this category, and the labour of doing the job twice is not. Order the gasket and the washers with any manifold work.

My accelerator pedal feels heavy or sticky.

On a cable operated throttle, that is the cable. The inner cable corrodes inside its outer sheath, particularly where the outer has cracked and let water in, and the result is a pedal that feels heavy, returns slowly or sticks at partial throttle. Do not simply lubricate a corroded cable, because a throttle that sticks open is dangerous. Replace the cable assembly, route it exactly as the original ran, and check that the pedal returns fully and freely before driving.

Should I fit a throttle spacer?

The spacer blocks listed here are the factory items, which usually serve as thermal insulators between the manifold and the throttle body rather than as performance parts. Aftermarket spacers sold for power gains do very little on an engine with a modern intake design and can alter the geometry the fuelling map was calibrated against. Fit the factory reference where one is specified, since removing it can allow heat to soak into the throttle body and change idle behaviour.

The part I need shows no price. Can I still order it?

Yes. Throttle bodies and intake manifolds are ordered per engine variant and the volumes are modest, so a fair number are listed for enquiry. Send the number and the engine code. Ask whether the throttle body needs a relearn after fitting, because most electronic units do and an idle that hunts after the swap is almost always a missed adaptation rather than a faulty part. Order the manifold gasket and the O rings with it. Those are the single most common reason an engine runs worse after the work than before it, since a reused gasket admits unmetered air.
