BYD Tang DM Parts

The BYD Tang DM pairs a 1999 cc turbocharged four with a six-speed dual-clutch gearbox on the front axle and an electric motor driving the rear axle, with no propshaft between them. Two things split the range and decide what fits: the emission build, which changes the engine model code and its ancillaries, and the motor count, since a version from 2020 deletes the front motor and drives on the rear alone. Read the model code before ordering, as it records both.

Symptom Finder: Known Weak Points

What you see or hearCheck first
Judder or a jerky pull-away at low speed The six-speed wet dual-clutch gearbox, its oil and its seals. Check the oil level and look for leaks before ordering clutch parts, then match each part by OE number.
Brake warning or unusual pedal feel On 2021 model year cars, the IPB integrated brake unit. On earlier cars, the separate ABS unit and master cylinder. Read the build date first, since the two systems do not share control hardware.
Unsettled ride or a suspension warning on a 2021 model year car The FSD variable-damping dampers fitted from the August 2020 update. Order dampers by the build date and OE number, since earlier cars use a different damper.
Electric range well short of what the car managed when new Check the charging socket, the on-board charger and battery cooling before the battery itself. Battery size and electric range from new differ between versions, so compare like with like.
Engine warning light Start with the lambda and emission sensors on the 1,999 cc turbo engine. Order by the OE number on the old sensor, since 151 kW and 141 kW engines differ.
Coolant warning or a falling coolant level Coolant hoses, the expansion tank and temperature sensors. The car cools an engine, a battery and up to two motors, so trace the leak to its circuit before ordering.
Parking sensor warning after a minor knock The ultrasonic sensors in the bumpers and their brackets. A bent bracket can trigger the warning on its own, so check it before replacing the sensor.

Most Replaced Parts on the Tang DM

  1. Switches, relays and fusesA large low-voltage electrical system runs alongside the high-voltage drive
  2. Fuel tank, lines and filtersThe 2.0-litre turbo engine keeps a full fuel system with a 53-litre tank
  3. Lambda and emission sensorsOrder by OE number, since early and China 6 engines are not the same
  4. Control arms and bushingsMacPherson front and multi-link rear suspension on a car of about 2.4 tonnes
  5. Gaskets and sealsThe turbo engine and wet dual-clutch gearbox both depend on sound seals

About BYD Tang DM Parts

The BYD Tang DM is the plug-in hybrid version of the second-generation Tang, a large SUV that went on sale in China on 26 June 2018. It measures 4,870 mm long on a 2,820 mm wheelbase and was sold with seven seats in a 2+3+2 layout, with five-seat versions also offered. A 1,999 cc turbocharged petrol engine drives the front wheels through a six-speed wet dual-clutch gearbox, and a 180 kW electric motor drives the rear axle, so the car has four-wheel drive with no propshaft. Most cars add a 110 kW front motor, and the traction battery is ternary lithium. The car therefore needs two kinds of parts. The engine side needs oil, filters, a fuel system and the emission sensors of a turbo petrol engine. The electric side needs motors, a battery and cooling. Every part on this page is listed by its OE number, and matching the number on the old part is the surest way to confirm a part fits.

What to know before buying BYD Tang DM parts

Start by making sure the car is the 2.0-litre Tang DM, sold from June 2018 until the Tang DM-p replaced it in 2022. The same body, 4,870 mm long on a 2,820 mm wheelbase, was also used for the Tang DM-i, which has a 1.5-litre turbo engine and an E-CVT, and for the Tang DM-p, which pairs a 1.5-litre turbo with a different hybrid system. Engine, gearbox, motor and battery parts from those cars do not suit the Tang DM. The first-generation Tang of 2015 also used a 2.0-litre turbo with front and rear motors, but it is a shorter car, 4,815 mm long on a 2,720 mm wheelbase, so its body and chassis parts belong to a different model.

Next, count the drive motors. At launch every Tang DM had two, 110 kW at the front working through the gearbox and 180 kW at the rear. For the 2020 model year, announced in September 2019, BYD added a version without the front drive motor. It keeps the 180 kW rear motor and adds a high-voltage BSG starter-generator on the engine, so it is still four-wheel drive, with the engine driving the front wheels and the motor driving the rear. Battery size does not mark this version out, since launch cars already came with about 20 kWh in the DM80 or 24 kWh in the DM100, so order battery parts by OE number, not by kWh. Front motor, controller and high-voltage parts depend on which version you have.

The engine changed too. Launch cars use the BYD487ZQA engine rated at 151 kW. From the 2019 model year the car was built to the China 6 emission standard and the engine is rated at 141 kW. Both are 1,999 cc, so the capacity will not tell them apart. Order engine sensors, emission parts and ancillaries by the OE number on the old part.

The biggest split for brake and chassis parts is the 2021 model year, launched on 16 August 2020. It brought an IPB integrated brake unit, which combines the ABS valve body and the brake master cylinder in one electro-hydraulic assembly, and FSD variable-damping dampers. Earlier cars use separate brake components, so brake control parts and dampers from either side of that date do not cross over. The same update merged the BSG and front motor controllers into one unit and replaced the bright chrome trim with matt silver. Read the build date on the identification plate before ordering any of these.

A few things vary from car to car. Launch cars run 255/50 R20 tyres with no spare wheel, but sizes vary by trim, so read the size on the tyre sidewall. For painted panels, order by the colour code on the car rather than by colour name.

Before You Order: 7 Checks

  1. Check that the car has the 2.0-litre engine and dual-clutch gearbox, since the Tang DM-i and DM-p share the body but not the drivetrain, then order driveline parts for the Tang DM only.
  2. Match the OE number on the part you are replacing to the OE number on the listing before you order.
  3. Count the drive motors before ordering motor, controller or high-voltage parts, since the single-motor version from the 2020 model year has no front drive motor.
  4. Read the build date on the identification plate before ordering brake control parts or dampers, and choose the part for cars built before or after the 2021 model year update.
  5. Order engine sensors and emission parts by OE number, since the 151 kW and 141 kW engines share the same 1,999 cc displacement.
  6. Read the tyre size on the sidewall before ordering tyres or rims, since sizes vary by trim.
  7. Order painted panels by the colour code on the car, and check whether the trim is chrome or the matt silver of 2021 model year cars.

Generations and Facelifts

The Tang name began with the first-generation Tang, which reached customers in June 2015. It used a 2.0-litre turbo engine with 110 kW motors front and rear, a 4,815 mm body and a 2,720 mm wheelbase. The second-generation car on this page is a complete redesign, so body and chassis parts do not cross between the two.

The second-generation Tang was shown at Auto China in April 2018 and went on sale on 26 June 2018, as the Tang DM plug-in hybrid alongside a petrol-only version. The DM paired the 151 kW BYD487ZQA engine and a six-speed wet dual-clutch gearbox with 110 kW front and 180 kW rear motors and a ternary lithium battery in two sizes, about 20 kWh in the DM80 and 24 kWh in the DM100, which was good for up to 100 km on electric power on the NEDC cycle.

For the 2019 model year the car moved to the China 6 emission standard and the engine was rated at 141 kW, so engine and emission parts should be matched by OE number. In September 2019 the 2020 model year added a single-motor version, with no front drive motor and a BSG starter-generator.

The 2021 model year arrived on 16 August 2020. It was a mid-life update on the same body: matt silver trim in place of chrome, darker bumper vents, the IPB integrated brake unit, FSD variable-damping dampers, a combined BSG and front motor controller and more driver-assistance features. Check the build date on the identification plate before ordering brake control parts, dampers or trim.

The Tang DM-i followed in 2021 with a 1.5-litre engine and an E-CVT, and in 2022 the Tang DM-p replaced the 2.0-litre Tang DM, going on sale on 25 August 2022. Both use the same body but a different drivetrain.

BYD Tang DM Parts: Frequently Asked Questions

How do I make sure a part fits my BYD Tang DM?

Match the OE number. Every part on this site is listed under the OE number printed on the original part, and if the number on the part you are replacing matches the listing, the part fits. That matters on the Tang DM because the same body carried several powertrains, and the car itself changed for the 2019, 2020 and 2021 model years. If the old part is missing or its number cannot be read, send us a photo through the quote form and we will reply within 24 hours, usually sooner.

How do I tell a Tang DM from a Tang DM-i or Tang DM-p?

Look at the engine and gearbox. The Tang DM has a 1,999 cc turbocharged engine and a six-speed wet dual-clutch gearbox. The Tang DM-i, from 2021, and the Tang DM-p, from 2022, both use a 1.5-litre turbo engine with a different hybrid drive. All three share the second-generation body, 4,870 mm long on a 2,820 mm wheelbase, so the outline of the car will not settle it. Once you know which car you have, confirm each part by its OE number before ordering.

Do parts from the first-generation Tang fit?

Only sometimes. The first-generation Tang, sold from 2015, also used a 2.0-litre turbo engine with front and rear motors, which is why the two get confused. It is a different car, though: 4,815 mm long on a 2,720 mm wheelbase against 4,870 mm and 2,820 mm, with 110 kW motors at both ends and a lithium iron phosphate battery. Body, chassis, battery and rear motor parts do not cross over. Some engine parts may, so check the OE number on the old part before ordering.

My Tang DM has only one electric motor. Is it front-wheel drive?

No. The single-motor version, added for the 2020 model year in September 2019, drops the 110 kW front drive motor and keeps the 180 kW motor on the rear axle. The engine drives the front wheels through the dual-clutch gearbox, so the car is still four-wheel drive. It also has a high-voltage BSG starter-generator on the engine. Front motor parts from a two-motor car do not apply to it, so count the motors before ordering and match each part by OE number.

Early cars have 151 kW and later ones 141 kW. Do the engine parts differ?

Some do. Launch cars use the BYD487ZQA engine rated at 151 kW. From the 2019 model year the Tang DM was built to the China 6 emission standard and its engine is rated at 141 kW. Both are 1,999 cc, so the capacity will not tell them apart, and emission sensors and some ancillaries are not shared. Order these parts by the OE number on the old part, and read the build date on the identification plate if the number has worn away.

What changed with the 2021 model year?

The 2021 model year went on sale on 16 August 2020. The body stayed the same, but the bright chrome trim became matt silver and the bumper vents turned darker. Underneath, BYD fitted an IPB integrated brake unit, FSD variable-damping dampers and a single controller for the BSG and front motor, and added driver-assistance features such as lane keeping and lane change assist. Brake control parts, dampers and trim differ either side of the change, so read the build date on the identification plate before ordering.

Does the Tang DM have a Blade battery?

No. The 2.0-litre Tang DM uses a ternary lithium traction battery. At launch it came as the DM80 with about 20 kWh and the DM100 with 24 kWh and up to 100 km of electric range on the NEDC cycle, and later two-motor cars are listed at 22 kWh. BYD's Blade lithium iron phosphate battery went into the Tang EV for the 2021 model year, not into the Tang DM. Battery modules, packs and management parts do not cross between the two chemistries, so order battery parts by the OE number on the old unit.

It is a plug-in hybrid. Does it still need oil and filters?

Yes. The 1,999 cc turbo engine drives the front wheels directly through the gearbox, so it needs engine oil, an oil filter, an air filter, spark plugs and the sensors of any turbo petrol engine. The six-speed wet dual-clutch gearbox has its own oil, and the car carries a full fuel system with a 53-litre tank. Plan servicing around the engine and gearbox as well as the electric side, and order filters and seals by the OE number on the old part.

Will brake parts from an early Tang DM fit a later one?

Not always. Cars from the 2021 model year, launched in August 2020, use an IPB integrated brake unit that combines the ABS valve body and the master cylinder in one assembly. Earlier cars have them as separate parts, and the two systems do not share control hardware. Every Tang DM has ventilated discs front and rear, but discs, pads and calipers should still be matched by OE number rather than assumed to carry over. Read the build date on the identification plate before ordering.

What tyres does the Tang DM use, and does it carry a spare wheel?

Launch cars run 255/50 R20 tyres on both axles and carry no spare wheel. Wheel and tyre sizes vary between trims and model years, so the size fitted to another Tang DM is no guide to yours. Read the size printed on the sidewall of the tyres already on the car before ordering tyres or rims, and order wheel bolts and centre caps by OE number at the same time so they suit the rim.

Is every Tang DM a seven-seater?

No. The Tang DM was launched with seven seats in a 2+3+2 layout, and five-seat versions were offered as well. Second and third-row seats, seat belts and floor and boot trim depend on the layout, so a cabin part from a seven-seat car may not suit a five-seat car. Check the seat layout in the car before ordering, then match each cabin part by the OE number on the old part.

Do Tang EV parts fit the Tang DM?

Some body parts may, but drive parts do not. The Tang EV uses the same second-generation body, but it has no engine, no fuel system and no dual-clutch gearbox, and from the 2021 model year it used a Blade lithium iron phosphate battery. Motors, battery, cooling and engine-bay parts are specific to each car, and panels that look alike can differ in detail. Treat every part as separate until the OE number on your old part matches the listing.

Safety Recalls Affecting This Model

No recall applies to the second-generation Tang DM. Two separate campaigns get attributed to it in reports, and neither one names it. The battery-tray replacement campaign is widely described as covering the Tang DM, but the formal notice names only 2021-model Tang DM-i trims with a different VIN stem, and no 2.0T trim appears in its model list. The 2025 drive-motor controller campaign covers 2015-model cars built up to July 2017, which is the first-generation Tang DM on a shorter, separate shell, built before this second-generation car existed.

If you have been told your Tang DM is covered by either campaign, check the VIN stem against the notice yourself rather than the model name alone, since both campaigns are named after cars that share a badge with this one but not its parts or its build. A 2.0T second-generation Tang DM, identified by the LC0CD4C4 or LC0CD4D4 plate stem, sits outside both.
